We know what a.m. and p.m. mean but what do the letters actually stand for? Do you sometimes confuse e.g. with i.e.? What are their full forms? And what do all these letters have to do with that old language which keeps popping up in my videos-Latin?
All this and more in the video. But first do subscribe to The English Nut. If you already have, thank you!
Episode #107
TITLE: Common abbreviations: Do you know their full form?
As I’ve mentioned before, Latin is the root of many English words-including these abbreviations that we use every day. I’m sure we all know that 9 a.m. means 9 o’clock in the morning. But what exactly is a.m.? Does m stand for morning? Find out in the video. Likewise for p.m.
While we use a.m. and p.m. for times of the day, there’s another pair of abbreviations we use for years and centuries-BC and AD. Find out what these stand for. What is their 'more secular' form.
When I was in school, someone had fooled me into believing that AD stood for After Death. Find out what it really stands for.
When you talk about the 2nd century BC-you are talking about the hundred years that started on the first day of 200 BC and ended on the last day of 101 BC. I found this a bit tricky in school because it seemed to me that the years from 200 BC to 299 BC should be called the 2nd century BC-but then I realised my error.
Things get a little simpler with AD, because you’re counting in ascending order-2, 3, 4 and so on-the way we are used to doing.
The calendar we use today is known as the Gregorian calendar. Find out why. Find out who devised it. Find out which calendar was in use before that and why it was replaced. Find out its connection to the rotation of the earth around the sun.
Is this calendar 100% accurate? Well... watch the video!
We'll also talk about e.g. This means ‘for example’. Find out what e.g. stand for, how to remember what it means and how to use it in a sentence. Ditto for i.e.
Are there any other Latin abbreviations that you know or would like me to cover in the future? Do mention them in the comments below.
