Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal celebrated its 50th Anniversary on May 7, 1989. The highlight of the event was the pacing approach to the station of SP 4449 and UP 8444. I had shot the equipment move of 8444 the previous day coming over Cajon Pass. There was also a lineup of cab units from the three railroads involved in the Union Terminal operations, the SP and ATSF units coming from Sacramento and the UP unit coming in with the 8444. The station was also open for regular Amtrak services, with the San Diegans and Coast Starlight arriving and departing. The following day the steamers paced each other leaving the terminal, and again going up Cajon Pass with the 4449 on the Palmdale Cutoff and the 8444 on the ATSF line (UP trackage rights).
