Hey Luke, (boy that's was weird to say) I know everyone keeps hounding you for a "LMC kit" but I think they are missing the real invention, the computer controlled vacuum leak module. That is what it's really about. I would love for you to sell plans to build that with a downloadable file for the program. That thing could help a bunch of folks really dial in their carb powered cars to an exact AFR. Anyway thank you for creating some "real" content! Keep it up!

I did this back around 1994 on a ford van with leak in the "power valve" in the bottom of the bowl (no shop would tell me the truth), to prove to myself that the big carb had gone bad somehow. My tiny lawnmower carb pulled immense volume of fuel without surging (power valve symptom), but ran up to 40 MPH. I would like to have definitive explanation of how you got vapor lock - I think the heat problem is in the fuel pump thus you can't get enough vapor flowing through the lines to run right. The vapor is the key to high fuel mileage, and there was proof of running really well. So maybe having very low pressure in the venturi is a help to vaporize the heavier hydrocarbon chains. Also heat is a big help. I just ordered a manifold for 5.7 vortec that has extra water connections so I can heat my lawnmower carbs (somehow) and go to hei ignition (ditching the fuel injection road-risky crap). The tricks for getting air valved into the manifold to make a 14.5 ratio are not yet understood by me (but I will pull it hot off the exhaust manifold), so I will search the related vids some more. I'm wondering what device can actually measure this ratio... and what about the total vaporization versus globules - does this matter to the device? Watching the Maverick get 41 MPG was convincing - is there any further clarification? It has to do with vaporization and NO waste by globules. How about getting an emissions test? How about inserting some glow plugs in the manifold to raise temp (more vaporizing of globules)? What if you could go to 50 MPG? I think people besides me will say it likely is possible with somewhat better vaporization than what you achieved. Who will first succeed?

What you need is a fresh air intake for the carb. Currently, the carb is sucking in outside air that has been heated both by the engine/exhaust manifolds and through the radiator. It's about the charge density of the air as Gale Banks says. Big scoop to force cooler air into the little carb - poor man's supercharger.
@PaulThomas-qo9vy
2 жыл бұрын
I suggest the hot underhood air may be adding to the vaporization process, although reducing power density. Luke, how about some cool air ducting to the twin air filters, with duct tape sealing off underhood hot air, experimentally, of course. A thermocouple on air filter before & after cool air ducting mods., would be of interest! My guess is 123 deg. Farenheit Delta T. Will mileage drop & power increase, or both increase... hmm... @@blanchae I am no mechanic apart from tinkering with lawn mowers and an old mgb 1800 twin carb. but would it be right to say warm air might be problematic much like thin air at high altitude, so it is more about density than temperature ? Also if you can explain the afr is about air volume to atomised fuel volume, but what units are they measure in his ratio 14.1, sorry , as I say , not a mechanic. cheers.

You're a smart kid. Much smarter than I am. Every cheap lawn mower carb I had always leaked, so be ready for it and carry a fire extinguisher. Maybe I missed where you figured out it was 37 miles to calculate mpg. 1970's Ford odometers were more a estimate than fact, plus with the change of rims/tires, and wear and tear, its probably not close to accurate. Hopefully you used a GPS app. You overfilled so more like .8 and if 37 is accurate, then its more like 46mpg. Thanks

You are blocking the airflow on the radiator with that set up. You need a thicker fan shroud,so the air is pulled by the fan from the whole radiator surface area and not only its own foot print. You need flappers installed on the shroud,so you don't block air flow generated from the car's speed. Also a fan thermoswitch and relay will allow the fan to run only when necessary,you create a load on the engine by running the fan when no need for it. If you can save 5 hp from the alternator,it's less heat generated for you,and more mpg. You can use shims on the hood's hinges,so air will escape after passing through the whole engine bay,cooling dwon the carb,and feeding fresh air to it. If you want to run lean,have a slightly colder thermostat,or adjust AFR past to "peak of lean" like on planes. they run lean,cool even if it's AVgas,like you said,you don't have cylinder pressure or detonation risks on your set up. You can easily improve.

Idea for economy and power. Tripower manifold set up as dual plane. (is Offenhauser designed this way?) Center carb feeds all 8 cylinders through its own smaller volume path to keep velocity high. That would also be the lower path capturing engine heat for even better vaporization. Very small carb, lawn mower or motorcycle, goes in the center for normal driving. Front and back carb positions are for power and kick in as needed and feed the cylinders through their own half of the manifold. They are typically 2 bbl carbs but that could be altered for optimum performance.
