Do you lie down, or lay down? Is it lay-low, or lie-low? Do you lay the book down, or lie the book down! These 2 verbs have been confusing us for centuries!
In today’s video, we will:
- Learn exactly what each verb means
- Learn their forms in 4 common tenses
- Review examples to clarify the usage of each verb
- Learn 2 tricks to help you remember which verb to use in which context.
Lay: Means to place something down. This something cannot move by itself… E.g.: I lay the book on the couch. (The book cannot move itself, so I lay it down)
Lie: Means to move to a flat position. So it has to be something that can move on its own to get into that position or something that is already in that position.
Lay is transitive: It requires an object upon which the action is exerted.
Lie is intransitive: It does not require an object
So, someone (animal or human) lies down, but you lay something (that cannot move itself) down.
Here are now these verbs are used in different tenses:
Lie:
- Present: I Lie down
- Past:I lay down
- Continuous: I am/was lying down
- Perfect: I had/have lain down
Lay:
- Present: I lay the book down
- Past: I laid the book down
- Continuous: I am/was laying the book down
- Perfect: I have/had laid the book down.
Here are 2 tricks to remember which one is which. There are 2 sentences in which we never get these 2 verbs mixed up:
- The hen lays an egg.
- Let sleeping dogs lie.
So, if you get confused, go back to these 2 phrases/sentences, and that will help you pick the correct one, every time!
