Welcome to episode #98 of the A Quirky Journey podcast!
GUEST INFORMATION:
Elyse: I'm Elyse Comerford, a Mum, Exercise Scientist, GAPS practitioner and Health Coach. My approach focuses on healing the gut to bring about profound health changes, and the fact is, it works!
My practice focuses on assisting my clients to heal their digestive system and overcome various issues, just as I have done. As a teenager I suffered with acne, persistent thrush, cysts and abscesses in my breasts and ovaries, constant bloating, anaemia, depression, sugar addiction, constipation, diarrhoea, and food intolerances that were getting progressively worse. I had begun thinking these issues were normal, and something I would have to live with. It was a very empowering moment when I learnt the connection the gut has with all of these issues, and how I could transform my health by first transforming my gut and microbiome. I was 27 and pregnant with my first child when I began researching everything I could so that he would be as healthy and happy as possible, this is when I discovered the microbiome. I knew the gut bacteria was important, but I had never realised how important!
Science has found that an imbalance of gut bacteria is a contributing factor in obesity; that bacteria plays an important role in normal healthy brain function and the prevention of anxiety and depression; and bacteria is an essential part of our immune system, and our body will struggle to deal with viruses, infections, pathogens and toxins if it is out of balance. Armed with all this new information a passion was ignited within me to heal my health, and this soon branched out to helping everyone that I care about.
I was already completing a Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science with Charles Darwin University at the time, and with any spare moment I had I was pouring myself over scientific research to do with the gut. I went on to complete a certification in Holistic Health Coaching with the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, followed by my GAPS Practitioner Certification with Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride.
PODCAST DESCRIPTION:
When you’re working on healing gut issues with the added challenges of MTHFR gene mutation, histamine issues, candida, heavy metal toxicity, allergies, etc, it’s vitally important to take each step slowly and carefully. In this episode, Jo and Elyse Comerford (GAPS practitioner and nutritionist) talk through the challenges of working through the layers of healing, not rushing through, and facing each new challenge as it arises with trust that you are on the right journey. Elyse reminds us that even when you seem to be getting nowhere, your body is working hard under the surface to make you well again, so it’s important to not give up - keep on with all the nourishing foods and the rest and the sunshine and clean water and getting out into nature and swimming in the ocean or lakes and all the things that help the body to heal, and trust you are making progress.
We also continue with last week’s discussion about MTHFR and histamines, and answer nitty gritty questions from readers about MTHFR, heavy metals, parasites, signs and symptoms of these health issues, and knowing when to test and when to wait. (We go into a lot more detail about MTHFR and testing in the last episode, Healing with MTHFR & Histamine Issues.)

NOTEWORTHY QUOTES:
On parasites: "When it comes to parasites, they're in the their for a reason. The body has invited them in for a reason, just like a muddy swamp invites in bugs and parasites to clean it up. Our body is inviting parasites in for a reason. The ecosystem that is our body and our gut and our microbiome... There's something going on with that ecosystem that needs parasites. Parasites are not an issue of exposure. You could go to Bali with your buddy and they could get a parasite infection and get sick, and you're not. You're most likely both exposed to the parasite, but if your gut is in a better state, that ecosystem is healthier, then it's not inviting the parasite in or allowing it to proliferate and cause an issue."
