It is almost the same case used on my "MLRS interface unit MK2" I made a teardown of, my unit has even more screws .

Very interesting description. The very large amount on serial ports is clear to me. Touch one and modem chips refer to analog telecom phone lines for this box. It would be still more informative to see each board clearly in a static photo for 6 seconds. I like to admire the amount on engineering work hours for the whole manufacturing process: specs, design, test, negotiatins, purhase, testing, approving, documenting, manual writing, delivering, spare part calculating, etc.

An interesting device, surprised those chips were in sockets on the first board. If you could leave the static images on screen a bit longer, not enough time to read. Your cat was definitely interested, they always make it more entertaining.

Here's an abstract based on the transcript. I used gemini advanced for this. **Abstract** This video presents a teardown and analysis of a military-grade meteorological computer manufactured by GEC Marconi. The system, part of the BMETS (Battlefield Meteorological System), calculates factors including air density and wind patterns to optimize missile trajectory. The presenter examines the computer's external connectors and heavy-duty enclosure before disassembling it. Inside, the device reveals several circuit boards containing components such as an 80C186 microprocessor, math coprocessor, SRAM, EPROMs, and various other integrated circuits. Of particular interest is a specialized DC-DC power supply with conformal coating and high-quality components, reflecting the rigorous requirements of military hardware.

hide the oscilloscope further while the box is being turned - the monitor of the device has touched the corner of the case...

"Connect cable to sonde !" - sonde is german for probe, so maybe some german influence on the PRGS part

Sonde is also the French word for sensor or probe. However I found the word "sonde" in some English documents, for instance this one: www.radiodetection.com/sites/default/files/Sondes-UserGuide-V7.pdf

crazy amount of machining on the large case, every wall on the inside and that depth and small corner radii is stupid expensive, why would they do it when there is zero point, just cast, machine mounting surfaces and paint the rest - reasons why west can't afford necessary amount of military equipment that is now being taken advantage of :(

It is crazy -- this hardware is built as though the expense and the length of the manufacturing process are of zero importance. But if you look closely at the hardware in the Russian Tornado-S missiles, (which are a rough equivalent of the rockets used with HIMARS), they are even less optimized for manufacturing. The amount of manual labor involved in making them is unbelievable, and that is reflected in the astronomical costs and in relatively tiny production numbers. But since Russia is willing to spend as much as it takes and to hire an additional quarter of a million of workers to assemble whatever is needed, they do get a steady trickle of hardware.
