Speaking of heating bearings, you can wrap a bearing in a wet rag or paper towel and put it in a microwave, works great, and is much faster then a torch. You can also use it to heat up lunch :) just hook it up to the welder generator on your truck. Another great video keep it up.

Hey Warren Awesome video! I saw the weld trick with the bearing race you did to pull it out of the bore. Years ago one of the old timers taught me to drill about a 1/4 hole almost all the way through the race 180 degrees from each other then chisel on the drilling to crack the race. The idea is to split the race in big pieces to pull out by hand, kinda like drill splitting a crank gear.

Thank you for showing the inner race removal (welding the inside of race to shrink upon cooling). That’s a trick you typically learn the hard way... a welding friend clues you in. To install a new inner race, I typically use a can of dust off (compressed air), flip the can upside down, and spray the liquid (difluoroethane) on the inner race. It’ll shrink it a couple of tenths...race can be dropped in. Awesome video!

Yes, duster spray (R152A) should be a standard tool on his truck. Absolutely freeze a race in seconds. At about seven dollars a can at wally world and so environmentally friendly you can spray it right into the air, a very useful tool.

The axle is only that large because it doesnt use a "Floating" style axle. In a "floater" the axle only transfers power, not having to hold any vehicle weight. A truck using a floater will have bolts around the center of the hub. You pull those bolts and the axle simply slides out. Even with the wheel on the vehicles you can remove and replace the axle

I'm not a mechanic but know a bit about lifting things that have nowhere to catch onto, make a couple of short metal legs and fix them to a strap, one on each end with a lifting eye in the middle of the strap. The legs are made like the legs on a puller/bearing extractor, L shaped the bottom of the L facing in over. the heavier tha load the harder they grip. You can even make a 3 or 4 legged strap for better balance. You have obviously seen how a puller works and its the same principal. I've used this to unload 50 gallon drums of oil only on the rim, 5 high full fish boxes and any number or things with no holding points.

Warren, that looks a lot like a JD 644 wheel loader axle. I wish I had a crane, plenty of good learning rebuilding those. Dry tube with that labyrynth type seal for the outer axle and lip seal to keep the other lube out of the tube. I didn't like the bearing preload procedure so just used a big hoss pry bar with the housing on the floor to get the .003 end play. I didn't weld the bearing, I think I used a claw hammer to hook it and then a punch from the far side. I was mystified how a 1 inch 8 bolt can hold a wheel onto a loader.

In one of your videos you said it took you 8 hrs to get home when you were in the Navy - Shit, I was lucky if it took 8 days much less 8 hours to get home. Wanted to be in the Seabees, and they made me a radioman! Then at 3 rd class I changed to Yeoman. I was the worst Yeoman in recorded naval history, but I was a good Radioman. Hell I couldn’t go up for 2nd Class because I couldn’t type fas enough, and I still can’t type. Was on Guam for 18 months where I did cryptographic work for CINCPACFLT (ADM McCain - Senator McCain’s Father). They were all Top Secret SPECAT (special category) messages sent to GEN Creighton Abrams (they named a tank after him) who was the head guy in country Vietnam. Left Guam and travelled 1/2 way around the world to the USS PROVIDENCE CLG-6 stationed on the Gunline off the coast of Vietnam. I was lucky not to be stomping around in rice patties, but they still tried to kill us on a regular basis. I did some research for my disability claim and found out that a NorthVietnamese artillary shell missed me by 20 yards according to the Captain. They got passed off because we went in to Haiphong North Vietnam and shelled the shit out of them! I got Prostate Cancer, Peripheral Neuropathy and Parkinson’s Disease from exposure to Agent Orange while I was there, but I’d do it again if they asked me. After duty on the Providence I was sent to a cushy job on Destroyer Squadron 31 Staff, then I got out and went home. What did the Navy have you doing on the sub base? Keep On Truckin, David

You can also put a little bit of Grease around the axle where your bearing goes lay your bearing down on a piece of metal heat the inside of the bearing and it will slide right down to where it needs to go because I had seen the inside of the bearing break where you was using the air hammer
@jsmetalcraft2001

I hope by now you have the torque specifications. I did a smaller model but very similar. Outer bearing went out and is only lubricated by grease. I shake my head at JD's thinking. Anyway I found the hard way that those bolts need higher torque then the tight and back off 1/4-1/2 turn. Months later they were too loose for my liking.

Hello young man! really interesting video again. Please can you show more of the welding shrinkage technique for removing bearings next time you get one to do? I have never seen that done before and would like to know more. On the lifting of the planetary drive, can I suggest you get a three or a four leg chain set to hook onto your crane. The hooks on the chains will or should go over the flange on the PD when it's laid down and then you can lift the assembly into place. Failing that due to room between the flange and the axle casing. Failing that dig deep and buy an electromagnet with enough lifting power to lift the assembly. Now, where can you buy a cheap electromagnet I hear you say? Just go buy used a mag drill, you can thank me later! Thanks for video young man and take car and be safe!

Hey you were wondering on gauges for the Peter bilt project? I may have a solution to that. If you look up on the web Murphy gauges, they have the gauge sets that can work on a j1939 Network. Murphy makes a module that intercepts all signals from engine ecm and converts to old style analog signals for tach. As well they make a module that is a gauge / diagnostic tool itself, that would allow you to have a def level gauge and as a well a monitoring unit for any other parameters you want to keep a eye on. They also have a basic ability to throw out a code to you to let you know what is basically going wrong when check engine lamp is on. Hope this helps a bit , I hear ya on hard work. Farmers up here in West Central Saskatchewan are ready to go, but rain has kicked us for a couple days.

Not a bad idea but 2 min with a good plate of steel and use your oxy to heat in the centre of the plate with the bearing on the plate flat, evenly heats bearing up to 180C and drop straight on. Also a bit of planning and have those cups in the freezer they will drop in pretty easy.
