I'm teaching myself ASL because I love languages, but I didn't really want to learn from a teacher. The reason is pretty simple, they can hear and they don't have to rely on ASL to communicate. It's like learning anything else you want to learn it from someone who experiences it. So Thank You!!

Yeah, I get it... It's like learning any other language from someone who doesn't speak that language, they don't have the right accent or pronunciation or the general understanding of the informal vs formal use, it's just different from someone who actually uses that language

Some guy on Tik Tok has a deaf daughter and said in an ideal world all ASL teachers would be deaf or hard of hearing. An example that he gave was that a hearing person would sign “telephone pole broke” while a deaf person would sign telephone pole and show that it’s broken. However learning sign language from someone who hears is better than none.

@@inkbery4473 That's not really fair though, because you not only can but you should learn the correct accent and pronunciation when you speak a foreign language. You'll never be truly fluent without those aspects of speech, and in some languages such as Korean, you won't be understood at all if your accent and pronunciation isn't native level or near-indistinguishable from it.

ASL requires facial expression along with the signs. Facial expressions make up the signs.
@juliablin1684

facial expressions are needed to clarify what you're saying. In spoken language you can shout when you're angry and people understand how you feel by the tone of your voice, so in ASL facial expressions fill in for that part of the language. It's also needed for asking questions.
