Great video Jim. You clearly understand the problems of aerodynamics and can explain it simply for beginners. Cant wait to watch the rest!

Glad to hear that. All of us are still learning, but it's good to pass along what we learn along the way!

Great learning here, Jim. Thanks for this. I am using RealFlight Evolution with my Spektrum NX8 plus the dongle. This is an excellent way to gain more experience at the controls.

That's a good approach in getting started. It will help acquaint you with what it's like with the plane both coming and going. In the landings it will also help you with judging the appropriate airspeed and avoiding over-correcting. But the big caution is that it's a lot easier than flying the real thing. One of the main differences is that their planes don't stall very easy. Also, some RC planes have a big 'torque effect', wanting to pull left violently when you hit the throttle, especially at low airspeed, such as in a takeoff. So be careful when you get started with the real thing!

Hi Jim, Thank you for creating this video. I’m totally new to the hobby and found your explanations really helpful. While I understand that the plane you used in the demonstration isn’t proper for beginners, I’m still intrigued by it and would appreciate it if you would share the name/type of the model. Thanks again.

Hi Jack, that is an E-Flite 1.2 m P-51. The new ones have a different colour scheme. I've produced a separate video that includes sorting out issues in setting it up: "RC Plane CG and Centre of Lift." With regard to flying, it stalls really easy, and what is really unusual, is that takeoffs are a big challenge. A lot of experienced guys in our club won't even consider flying one. Landing and taking off on grass bends the landing gear back unless every landing is perfect, and you don't hit any little potholes taking off. They can be bent back. But it is beautiful in the air, and flies nice. The best plane to start with, in my opinion, is a 1.8m FMS Ranger. It doesn't have any bad habits at all, and it is really tough. Have a look at my video "FMS Ranger Repair after Nose Dive."
