A question related to writing a paper or a dissertation is whether we can leave the translations last. Because we know that they are important, but we might prefer to first write the bulk of the dissertation and move on to the translations only once everything else is ready. This way we can work on them together in batch. Although this may appear logical, I fundamentally think that this is not the right approach because the primary sources you translate should form the basis of your arguments. You may think you understand what they say but often it is only when you translate them that you realize many of the specific points, and these might in turn have implications for your argument. They are not illustrations or ornamentation. So you should translate them as you write the rest, they are part of the core apparatus.
