Are ALL amino acid chains in a trans configuration? Or only the ones that are long enough to clash into each other? Breaking apart from crashing is the only mechanism I can think of for why they couldn't exist in a cis configuration.

The explanation for why bonds stronger than single electron covalent bonds don't rotate isn't intuitive to me. The double pencil analogy is a good heuristic, but isn't physically representative of what must actually be going on.

@@patrickfolan4005 Thanks for all your answers. For this one, I guess I should look more into the physical chemistry. It seems strange to me that a bond should form multiple "anchorage" links in space. It seems like there should be a rotational symmetry for this bond, almost as if the two pencils in that analogy could rotate around the axis between them.

@@patrickfolan4005 Excellent video! Thanks! That goes much further into hybrid orbitals that I've gone before. That diagram at 8 minutes does indeed show why a pi bond will make it hard to rotate, at least on the level of explanation I want to go into right now for intuition.
