On a whim, my son & I shot this footage with dear friend & talented videographer Duane Millares. After shooting 3 versions of the footage (me solo, Mark Jr. solo, and then both of us together), Duane edited it together to tell a story.
At the beginning of the story, my son is practicing a set form from the Gee Yung school of Sil Lum (Shaolin) Fut Ga kung-fu with this ancient Chinese glaive (Kwan Do) alone. The footage of the set switches to me, as if my memory, energy, & movements lives on through him. In the 3rd segment, the two of us are going through the set together, like a flashback to a time when we could train as father & son. You can tell that his timing is just a hair behind mine on some of those moves, as if to show that he’s still learning the set during those moments. My son finishes the form’s sequence on his own, without his father beside him. But at the end, during the prayer hand salute, the switch back to me shows that I’m still with him.
Let me know your thoughts on this experiment!
