Aside from several retcons and sloppy moments in writing, Alarak's plot line was kinda good. It feels like it had the potential to be great, if it weren't flat tired by other missions. Good video!

Tal'darim were retconned not just twice, but THRICE. The first Tal'darim written into the lore out-of-universe would be Ulrezaj's renegade Dark Templar in the Enslavers II: Dark Vengeance mission pack and the Dark Templar Saga novels, but Blizzard retconned them so that they're not the real Tal'darim, they just happened to pick the same name for their group.

I don't know...you praise these missions for making sense, but just because they make sense doesn't necessarily mean that they're good. Just good compared to the rest of it. Though I suppose it's as you said, that the poor choices up to this point are a bad foundation for the action here. However, I can't help but feel that adding all this nonsense with the Tal'darim is a poor substitute for actually fleshing out Khalai culture and Dark Templar culture, two things that fans actually care about in a Protoss campaign.

"you praise these missions for making sense, but just because they make sense doesn't necessarily mean that they're good. Just good compared to the rest of it." Pretty much this. "However, I can't help but feel that adding all this nonsense with the Tal'darim is a poor substitute for actually fleshing out Khalai culture and Dark Templar culture, two things that fans actually care about in a Protoss campaign." Unfortunately Blizzard seems to have decided that the only thing that separates these cultures is a different eye colour. That's why removing the nerve appendages didn't make any of the High Templars into Dark Templars. That's why there aren't any different castes, competing interests, or resentment.

Wanted to say this the last time, but didn't. I think the Tal"darim executor was just an executor, not their supreme leader, like how Tasadar and the Player were executors for the Protoss in SC1. So I'm not sure that's a retcon. Maybe just bad writing, as I don't recall excatly how he was described in the game.

He seemed to be leading the Tal"darim during the 1st game. Also they never mentioned anyone above him.

@uanime1 I don't remember the exact details but maybe it wasn't relevant who exactly led them. Or maybe they hadn't decided. They certainly could have done some foreshadowing

@@MaxRavenclaw I suspect Blizzard made this up as they went along.

@@uanime1 I'm sure they did, but this particular case might not be the best example. Executors are pretty well established roles in Protoss society, I'm not sure even modern Blizzard writers were that forgetful. But you never know.
