Your review is spot on. Other reviewers wave away the issues like they’ll certainly be fixed soon, but there are no guarantees. I prefer the Go over the Ally in every way except the weight and manufacturer software (and speakers, though I usually use headphones). As of right now the Go is a definite return for me and I would stick with my OLED Steam Deck that arrives in a couple days. Lenovo is supposed to have two more updates in 2023 so I’ll wait for at least the late November one before deciding. The fix for the massive deadzone on both joysticks is hopefully getting bumped up into that next update. It’s a dealbreaker because precise movement and aiming is currently incredibly difficult.

thanks for the honest review. by far the best video so far highlighting some glaring problems. i currently have a steam deck and rog ally and i actually find the steam deck a bit too heavy and bulky in my hand as they also seem to dig in to my hands and cause pain after longer use vs my ally which i have grown to love how light it is given its plastic, it's been by far the most comfortable to hold. since the go is much bigger and a bit heavier i think ill pass on it. now, if they ever come out with a smaller version i would def think about getting it if the software bugs can be worked out.

@@SurgemanX The Ally's default fan curve is poor, I have my own custom fan curve and it never goes over 75 degrees on my custom 30w tdp setting and most importantly the fans are quiet. The default turbo plugged in 30 w fan curve the Ally hit's 95 degrees which is too way hot for my liking. The cooling on the Ally is very good and the fans are really quiet you just need to manually tinker with settings. I pop out the SD card now and again and it never feels hot but with default turbo it does get really hot. Asus need to be more aggressive with their fan curves because manually adjusting them makes a HUGE difference to temps. I set a tdp for 18 W for battery play and keep those same fan curves for both fans. The temps are in the 60 degrees. Nothing wrong the temps and the handheld is much cooler than my Steam Deck.

Thank you for explaining why the whole "The device is brand new, they need time to iron things out" is complete horseshit. They are selling this product in Best Buy. That means the average consumer that walks into Best Buy should be able to pick this up and immediately start playing. All the UI/UX troubles counteract that experience which is not good for their product. These are issues that should have been dealt with before release. And that goes for all Handheld PCs. Ease of use should be a number one priority, especially for a portable device.

I haven't experienced most of the issues he's describing with portrait mode (mine is always landscape). The Legion space app is trash but I close it the second windows finishes booting and it isn't needed at all. Other than that if you're used to gaming on windows, you'll know what to expect. Also the problem isnt the M2 button. Its the M1 button. M2 can be easily disabled. But M1 is actually a duplicate of RB and cannot be disabled yet with this version of firmware. I do frequently hit the M1 button and it does have negative consequences in many games.

The Legion GO is a mess. Lenovo Legion Space is borderline useless, makes Armoury Crate look like a miracle in comparison. You can not reconfigure any of the controller buttons, sticks, etc. to anything you would really want. There is the touchpad but there is no right click or left click and you can not assign any of the button to be right click or left click, ..... wtf lenovo!?!? This make using the right stick, and right bumper/right trigger in desktop mode on the Ally for mouse looks like a genius implementation. Additionally whether if the 1 or 2 controller is attached changes how the controller behaves. The best thing about the detachable controllers is that you can leave the pointless non-configurable controllers at home, get the weight saving and use it like a small tablet. The on screen performance monitor fails to stay on screen, just try it with BG3, you can not see it anymore. The faster memory is not getting you better fps in 2077. Stupid AMD software keeps crying about the wrong edition and you just can not pull up the AMD Adrenalin UI. The FPS mode is a gimmick, you can not play competitively against someone using a real gaming mouse (think G502, G pro, Deathadder, EC2 etc.). A really serious problem that plagues the Legion GO is that it is actually a portrait screen. And when it shows it is nasty and make the whole thing feel half baked. Old games, dosbox stuff will have all sorts of fit with this that would never be an issue on the ROG Ally. WTF is with the portrait screen anyways?! You launch a linux installer, or Acronis, or anything else text based direct booting some liveCD iso and this crap is just going to mess with you. Annoying as F!@$%!!! On top of it all the SSD run way too hot, temps while gaming using the max power tdp profile cause the SSD to hit 75C or higher, seriously?! In contrast the SSD in the ROG Ally is still a hair below 60C. The thing that was suppose to be the saving grace, the TB4 E-GPU, that is so hit and miss, it works with some and fails with others, just blue screens over and over. I really want to like the Lenovo Legion GO, but it feels at this time to be really half baked. It also just feels heavy. It its best mode of use is without the controllers and having it stand on its own kick stand, and with whatever kb/mouse and controller you would really want. And the final insult is that Legion Go Space puts the "store front" front and center, that is just obnoxious. It is trying to sell you crap all the time, whereas the Amoury Crate puts your game library front and center.

Majority of these issues can and will be fixed with software updates. Steam Deck and the Ally had issues at launch. Steam Deck was more solid but still had issues

@@1nine8two39 We should not give half-baked half-assed software easy low bar clear. Recall the state of 2077 lauch?! And that is just a game a 1/10 the cost of the Legion GO. @@1nine8two39 So because previous companies did it, everyone else gets a pass? This is bad business practice and you know it. Until consumers show companies that we aren't going to purchase broken devices preemptively, this will continue to happen. On top of that, Steamdeck was one of the first of it's kind; they're the reason why every other company is trying their hand at this. And every other company will continue to fail until they stop this mindset of "release it now, fix it later". Imagine if this came out with almost no problems. That's what every reviewer would be talking about instead and it would boost sales. They'd be a force to rekon with. Instead they prematurely launched their device and hope to the gods that us as consumers give them a pass, just you did in your comment above.

@@1nine8two39 it took Ally and steam deck both like 2-3 months to work out most of everything. I don’t see this being the case with Legion Go. Outside of that, all the buttons all over the Go and it’s gimmicks turn me off. If I wanted a big screen I would get a gaming laptop or play at a desktop. The handheld market I feel is perfect at 7 inch. 8 inch at the max but 8.8 inches is far too big. Makes it big and clunky and hard to use. The Ally in comparison, is much lighter, focuses on YOUR individual experience. Just the necessary buttons, nothing less, nothing more. Amazing front firing sound, a beautiful vibrant 1080p screen (I mean for real. I was playing super Mario wonder on the Ally and it felt like I was playing on a switch OLED). The Ally is a meaningful upgrade over steam deck. It’s only fault is it can’t run steam OS natively but that’s fine if you are fine with of gaming or want to explore it more. But the performance and comfort u get out of the Ally is amazing.

Isnt it obvious now why Lenovo wasnt forthcoming with reviews even a week before launch. They knew in what condition the console was in prior to launch. They just wanted to rake in the max amount of Preorders, consumers be damned. They should be hit with a Class Action suit by all those who purchased the Legion Go in its current state and have to wait for updates to add basic(and working)features that should have been there from launch......if only to serve as a deterrent to other companies looking to Sucker consumers the same way Lenovo Lied to its Legion go buyers.Plain and simple

Competition exists and nit picking is a necessary evil when a lot of reviews are glossing over the experience itself. Ultimately, I think Lenovo will do better but to have 4 back buttons that are pretty much unusable right now is a big problem they need to address. In its current state, it’s actually only beating the ALLY at 20W, 15 and below it does not. Lenovo has a lot of things to work on and I hope they will get there.

I picked this up a couple days ago from micro center and I couldn't agree more with your sentiments. This device is such a buggy mess at this point and the software is just horrific. Truly truly disappointing concerning how much I wanted to like this machine because on paper it seems like it would be such an upgrade from a steam deck but in reality I knew I was going to return it within 30 hours just because after so much tweaking and tinkering and reinstalling drivers and trying to fix the FPS overlay and trying to get things to be stable I just shouldn't be struggling this much with a device. Especially something that's $700. Shame on you Lenovo.

The ally is the upgrade over the steam deck. Especially now that the ally has been out for some time. Games play flawlessly. Playing games at 7w low tdp allows me to game for hours. If i put it to 18w mode it’s about 1 hour and 40 minutes Screen basically perfect. Landscape native, 7 inch 1080p. 120hz so you get that smooth VRR and LFC down to 24fps. Vibrant. All the resolutions look sharp in their own right, 900p being my favorite

Rog Ally is crap, Lenovo Go is crap and Steam Deck lacks compatibility. Buying a PC handheld is impossible. Easy to see why Nintendo dominated handheld market since 1981. No one else ever knew how to make a handheld.

Nintendo handhelds is just a bait for people to jump into their less than shiny jail. Nintendo always cost reduced their devices and limited the tech and performance so they can sell you more of their crap at inflated prices. I never bought a hand held, and then this year I got both the Ally and Go, and they will serve in more ways than just gaming handhelds and for a very long time to come, including running all the nintendo crap in emulation and not having to bend over and pay nintendo. Bootleg ROM FTW!!

@@aikafuwa7177 The problem with PC handhelds is that Rog Ally have poor plastic build quality. (I tried it at local store, so i know). Rog Ally is also known to have a SD slot that bricks SD Cards. Unlike Rog Ally, Lenovo Go also supports Charge & Terminate and have 100% drift free analogue sticks. Either way there is no perfect PC handheld. Need to see what Acer, HP etc. come up with before i get one.

@@V3ntilator Raw hardware wise ignoring software, it would seem the Lenovo Go provides more hardware i.e. more screen, more battery, touchpad, more buttons, more usb4 ports. But sometimes less is more, the light weight of the Ally is major plus for Ally, VRR, and better sounding speakers, better integrated thumbstick mouse navigation, better button locations, easier SSD extraction and swap, cleaner internal hardware layout. Software wise, Lenovo Space is just too much of a self-own at this time for it be used to really make an evaluation. Performance-wise both Z1 Extreme are basically delivering the same level of max tdp performance, all other in between lower TDP is just a numbers game, optimization tuning gimmickry, and if you are not careful you are going get fooled, because 1 watt difference will get you better numbers but that comes at the expense of battery run time, and it becomes a personal preference thing. And since I will likely hang on to both, it will only add to your 50/50 split.

@@aikafuwa7177 Thank you. I wanted to buy a handheld today and perhaps i wanted to try Rog Ally first until i found out on google that many have drifting analogue sticks on it. Unlike Asus, Lenovo comes with "Hall Effect sticks" which don't drift. And this...Some dude had to return Rog Ally 3 times before getting a working SD slot... I have seen in user reviews that SD Slots is randomly broken on Asus. I wouldn't buy a 1.TB SD anyway as 2.TB USB-C SSD is a lot faster and cheaper. The only way to get satisfied is to buy all PC handhelds on the market. ;-) I never expected the PC handheld market to cause this much "headache", because there is too many good and bad sides on all of them. The worst things about Rog Ally for me is the lack of Hall Effect sticks and a second USB-C port. Lenovo have both. One more thing. Official Asus Charger dock cost 90 bucks and only have USB 2.0. A huge bottleneck for USB 3.2 SSD.
