One other mesmerizing example of "this kid is going places" is Christian Bale at 13 in Steven Spielberg's 1987 "Empire of the Sun". Gary Oldman's first movie was 1982's all British cast "Remembrance", then in 1986 played the Sex Pistols Sid Vicious in "Sid and Nancy" and he "exploded". You should watch the directors cut. There is more scenes of Leon training up Matilda, Leon explaining his history of becoming a hitman. There is a scene which explains how he ended up sleeping in the bed. Some of the scenes made the US ratings board very nervous so they cut about 26 minutes out. These scenes make a lot of people get the wrong idea about their relationship and therefore feel uncomfortable about it.

That 'anti-hero with a heart of gold and an sidekick" archetype. Often seen in Western or Samurai dramas. But in an crime drama like this, it still hits. Jean Reno as Leon is great. The debut of Natalie Portman as Matilhda is wonderful. Gary Oldman as Stansfield (one of so many villain roles) is unbelievable. The song at the end, Shape of My Heart by Sting is a great movie song. I definitely check out La Femme Nikita (1990) or it's remake, Point of No Return (1993). Also from Besson, Lucy & 3 Days to Kill (2014) and ANNA (2019).

It is interesting that they both missed them talking about killing the little brother as Mathilda walked past the door, they only realized when Matihlad mentioned it to Leon several minutes later.

I watched this movie for the first time in the summer of 1995 and have been a huge fan ever since. Jean Reno played the cleaner in La Femme Nikita, also directed by Luc Besson, and I believe that character was the basis for Winston Wolf in Pulp Fiction. Liv Tyler was in the music video for the Aerosmith song "Crazy" that would have been filmed around the same time this was. It would have been a completely different vibe if she was Matilda.

Simply titled ‘Leon’ in the UK market, this is one of my favourite movies of all time. To this day, the best performances from Natalie Portman, Jean Reno and Gary Oldman. The score / soundtrack are also amazing. The POV shot at the end when Leon is falling to the ground gets me every time, the tears just start flooding. Thanks for the great reaction.

The Director's Cut delivers some more backstroy, particularly in a key later scene where Leon explains what happened to him when he was young, the reason he fled his native Italy and came to New York, and it's very powerful indeed. Your picking up on the flact that he's deeply traumatised early on is very accurate.

Its always funny to see how people perceive Metilda's and Leon's relationship. Some people say its P***philic in nature, and encourages that type of relationaship. I view it differently, and its because of my profession. I work with alot of young people, some very troubled and abused. . . Im male, and straight. And there have been many young girls Ive worked with who Ive trained and raised like they are my own. And ive noticed that alot of the girls who have never been treated well by men immediately mistake my kindness for Romance. Usually the ones around Metildas age. . .we always go through this transitionary period where i have to make sure they understand that its not romance. . .its just normal decency. I saw that from her in this movie, Ive actually seen this kind of confusion occur. Idk, just my perspective. But i could totally see how that kind of damaged young girl could easily be taken advantage of by preditors. And obviously, i dont condone that in any way.

If you liked this, and you like Jean Reno, then I highly suggest reacting to Ronin with DeNiro and Reno. It's not AS good as this and Heat, but it's still a great film and in the same vein.

My favourite film of all time, I have multiple copies, signed poster. I watched the film with friends when it came out, when it ended we went and bought tickets for the next showing straight after. Eric Serra sound track is amazing too and he’s worked with Besson on many films. Also consider watching Luc Bessons La Femme Nikita and The Big Blue (also with Jean Reno)

I think people have made good arguments for the director of this movie having bad intentions in how he tried to portray Mathilda and Leon's relationship. However, I also think whether it's due to Jean Reno's acting or whatever else, the most obvious and straightforward way to interpret that relationship is as platonic. I'm able to separate the art and the artist, so this is one of my favorite movies of all time.
