Anne more than deserved that Oscar. Her performance in this movie, particularly I dream a dream should be studied. Such a brilliant and haunting performance.

I thought that until I saw Gravity. I don't think Sandra Bullockd gave a better performance but won because her character had a greatly larger role. Gravity is basically about one person.

I swear I’ll never get tired of this musical. It’s so lovely and so personal, and there’s something very moving about it, it just burns your blood and you feel something boiling inside you. You feel the spirit and the strength, you can feel the hard work they put in. The extra miles they went through to make this a more epic movie.

One of the things I appreciate about this film (which was how I was introduced to Les Mis- you can say whatever you want about Russel Crowe but this movie will always have a special place in my heart) is that, in the musical, "Lovely Ladies" has this raunchy, rowdy, almost comical sound, but in the movie it's traded for a darker, eerier, sinister sound. I think that really captures the danger and the awful place Fantine is in while the song takes place. This movie was a doorway into a whole new world for me. Les Mis was one of the first musicals I fell in love with, and it was all because of this film. I watched it with my mom when I was a middle schooler, then shortly after that my friend found the book for me at the library and I read it and loved it, and then I had the amazing privilege of playing Gavroche in a production of the musical. Les Mis will forever hold a special place in my heart and is truly one of the greatest books/movies/musicals ever made.

I've always HATED musicals. When I first watched this movie at the picture theatre... after a couple of minutes... I was so deeply disappointed to discover that this movie was a bloody musical!! Admittedly, I was both disappointed but also highly impressed with the power of the opening song (Look Down). By the end of the movie, I was in absolute tears, and I realised I'd just watched the greatest movie I'd ever seen. To this day, it is my absolute favourite movie! I guess I do like musicals, after all.

As a musician, I am completely in awe of what these people have accomplished here. It’s so much hard work for everyone! And the orchestra having to sync with the playback... incredible. It must have been a great experience and a lot of fun anyway though!

My daughter talked me into going to this when it was in the theaters. Typically, I can't stand musicals, and I wasn't immediately in love with this when I saw it. I knew nothing of the songs and had only seen the Liam Neeson version of the story. However, it was the moment when Anne sang "I Dreamed a Dream" that I realized I was witnessing one of the most powerful performances I had ever seen on a screen. I went back home, listened to the songs again, and then rewatched it. I went from sort of liking the show to loving it. Seriously, I can't watch it without tearing up. It is now the number 1 movie I recommend to people when we discuss films. I enjoy nothing more than sitting with someone who is watching it for their first time and watching their reaction at certain parts. On another note, Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen are two of the most overlooked talents in this movie. I thoroughly enjoyed their characters.

Incredible video of a movie being made mostly on location with music being performed on set. As mentioned technology made it possible. I don't think any other movie has had the music done at same time. I've seen a stage version produced by Cameron Mackintosh & the film.

I waited for what felt like forever for this musical to be a feature film and recall thinking as the film started that Tom Hooper had better not fumble this or his professional life is over - he didn’t fumble. But - knowing Colm Wilkinson’s deep connection to LM, to see him as the bishop was perfection.

Hugh Jackman is an absolute talent, you only need to watch the boy from oz or Oklahoma to see his amazing voice. Yet the director in this had him not drink for three days and sing for 8 hours straight? It’s absurd, the fact he sounded as good as he did is insane - but imagine if the actors were allowed to just do this musical in a conventional way.
@karenthomas1456

It wasn't the director 's choice, it was Hugh's. He wanted to look like the character has been on hard labour and minimal rations for 19 years. One way to do that is to dehydrate yourself so your skin shrinks. It's a horrific process but I know some boxers do it.

They keep talking about how it was hard to cast this film because you needed actors who could also sing. But even after all of this work and them hitting the "sweetspot" of a cast, they still can't compete with the broadway performances.
