My mom is a minimalist but always used color in our home. I find most of the minimalist homes shown in videos too bland and sterile. I would probably have been depressed if my mom had not used color. Minimalism doesn't have to be boring.

There’s a way to take white and black tones to the next level. Most people just don’t know how to. My condo is 70% white, 20% black, and 10% gold tones. I did that because I think and work better in a space that’s airy and light. Not to mention my space is on the smaller end of the spectrum, so too much color will make it feel cramped. But there’s ways to do it

it’s weird how many minimalists ignore colour, when it’s such an amazing tool for modifying mood. And minimalist colour can still be vibrant and bold..

@@bakeraus Some of these interiors are specially prepared for video filming in a hypertrophied form. Plus, many radical minimalists are people with OCD. Spots of color and additional decor details can cause their underlying discomfort. As the saying goes, Show me your decor and I'll tell you who you are.

For point 1, I'd say it more just needs to solve whatever problem(s) initiated it's design. For a home, This is gonna be making a house that serves the life of it's occupants instead of just being a space that is occupied by them

As an artist I have found that a more complex picture on my wall means I do not get tired of it. A sunset for instance with a bridge quickly becomes uninteresting. Another picture which was a complex design of a church in Russia was still interesting after a long period of time. These were both in my office and I was surprised at how I reacted to these over time. Some people afraid of color go for white. My husband made me purchase a white piece of art glass. After a while he was fine with purchasing colored glass but I never did get him to go with glass containing gold. Those ended up in my office where only my view mattered and coworkers could enjoy them. I love Danish modern but apparently I am not a minimalist. I have found that putting Chinese detailed art and rugs with the wood and straight lines gives it a softer welcoming appeal. You would think a gold leaf Chinese screen with a nature scene doesn't fit in a modern living room with the usual beige leather sofa, etc. but it is a great focal point. Sorry but minimalist style reminds me of prison cells. I did love the windows to the outdoors but I need lace curtains to give privacy from the neighbors and let in the light. Just searched for lace roman blinds to replace some curtains. Apparently they are not made? Guess I stick to curtains because those old fashioned balloon type are crazy for a modern house. Will keep searching but I guess I wait until my style comes back into fashion.

A very interesting insight Diana, thank you. I will particularly take focus on what type of art captures my attention and be intentional about adding certain details to a design. I haven't really experienced creating my own space yet but for the future. I have some photo inspo to work with, the perks of having Instagram and Pinterest, we can now create a mood board of ideas for us.

Also, what I like about the minimalist aesthetic is I'm guessing it could allow yourself to clear your mind with less visual clutter and hopefully have less constant cleaning and maintenance required. I do agree that pops of colour can really transform a space as well.

I'm not an architect, but I do agree with these principles. I love minimalist design and have been applied these in my apartments. Combining with minimalist lifestyle and eco-friendly, I found myself content with my life. And I believe I will still enjoy life as the way it is until I grow old and grey.

Very good video, thank you for making this. The principles hold no matter the style of design. having said that, I hope minimalism becomes less common in the foreseeable future; I rarely see it as beautiful or inspiring. Could it be that information overload from hours on the internet has cluttered our minds to the point that we find relief in such spartan spaces? It would be nice to bring art back into rooms-and not just one piece. I love looking around at the things people choose to live with, it tells me about them and creates conversation. That’s my opinion - worth nothing of course!

I just don't understand how any of this is even relevant when this is all I heard for 8 years in school. I've worked for 7 years now and these are literally pipe dreams architects talk about sit around in circles jerking each other off. Literally 0 people on the other side give a shit about anything in this video. It's an uphill battle people, this is the religion/cult of architectural elite. You will be lucky to excersise 5 of these principals in any project. What they don't tell you is these principals of good design will only end up in the final product if the owner embodies then.
