Even though his lyrics were controversial, I think he established that it was all fictional, and he acted completely different from his former rap persona. Plus he changed his image, hasn’t really said anything “problematic” on a track since 2013, and honestly a lot of people in “cancel” culture grew up on his shit anyways, he had anti-establishment music which easily appeals to them.

People were jerking him off when flower boy dropped for not being controversial, but did they even listen to some of the lyrics? A lot of people started liking him and stopped «cancelling» him just because he was LGBT. If he dropped the line «that cherry be the bomb like he ran in boston» he would’ve gotten a lot of hate for it in the past. Yet i’ve never heard anyone mention it as being controversial, and i think that’s linked with him coming out. People dont care about his art, they care about if he fits in they inclusive world view where you’re automatically accepted if you’re not a straight man

I think part of 'cancel culture' is the fact that these people who are cancelled are due to a mistake or one instance which doesn't match their brand and therefore is shocking to their audience, whereas Tyler never appealed to these people in the first place. On Tyler's previous homophobic lyrics: No one wants to talk about this for some reason but some open lgbt people were once homophobes who grew up in homophobic communities and doubled down to cover themselves. As a bi person part of the lgbt community, I can see that Tyler might have just been one of those people that felt that they needed to double down to stay in the closet and I can forgive him for that shit cause I think we need to forgive lgbt people for the homophobia that they put on themselves, in order to help them heal and finally be who they are. I do understand other lgbt people who may still want to cancel Tyler for that, and that's fine. This is just my take as someone from the community.

Being transgressive and offensive used to be praised for crossing socially constructed lines and taring down polite societies sense of normality, now an artist using a naughty no no word gets them chastised by the new wave of puritans and the responses from the culturally accustomed listeners become “that’s cringe”, “big oof”, “yikes”.

It’s crazy how ironic this cancel culture is/was. You have people trying to cancel someone over edgy lyrics in Tyler’s case, while you have people like X being starkly defended by tons of people until the day he died, even though his actual abusive and sociopathic behavior was clear as day.

@eliasmg9144

He does have a point, some of the albums pre dark side of the moon are kinda ugly. And the artwork in question became one the most iconic pieces of art of our current time. It doesn't help the music is just as iconic as the artwork and that after dark side, pink floyd started to get attention and critical acclaim more than ever which was reflected on the later albums. Still, I don't think the album got big just because of the cover, in fact I'd say all the albums after it (except for the final cut) have better artwork so I don't think it has anything to do with them getting big

4:04 I think not listing the featured artists on songs keeps the album exciting and it’s one of the reasons why Astroworld is my favorite Trap album. I remember how cool it was when Astroworld dropped, finding Drake, Juice WRLD, Frank, The Weeknd, and even more made it so exciting on the first listen.
@dootlime

And before Rodeo fans call me basic, I’ve been listening to Travis since 2017 and I truly believe Astroworld is better than Rodeo. Rodeo’s great but there’s a few duds (Piss On Your Grave, Impossible, I Can Tell) that make the flow of the album pretty choppy.

Edehe this is just an old Louie CK bit but I have a hard time arguing with the logic. It’s incredibly sound. Censoring language is functionally the same as saying it because if you’re aware of what’s being censored than the message is still conveyed.

@@edehe2370 While it's true when I write or say N-WORD I do make everyone think of the word, therefore indirectly saying it and being responsible for any harm done as a result. But when censored, it presents a deferential acknowledgement of said harm. I think your argument is essentially the equivalent of throwing your hands up and saying "nothing good can come of it, so stop caring or burn it all down"

So the feature argument gave me this thought. Back in the long long ago in the time of CD's the insert could come with a lyric sheet with all the writer's and performers credits. No people download music without the sleeve to investigate to try to learn a little more about the band. What a whimsical time my teenage years were. Now-a-days the Feature on a song, in the minds of the artists, is just a simple nod to a bro helping them out. I mean it is literally just a few more characters of text when it comes right down to it. To them it is just as easy as saying thank you.

regarding the artists not being credited in song titles; i don’t think having features listed in a song title adds anything to a song other than maybe new listeners wanting to listen to certain features. but regardless of if a feature is credited in the title, they’ll always be credited in the credits of the song like on apple music or genius

People that think Pearl Jam is a bad band are objectively wrong. Ten is mad decent, Vs. and Vitalogy are masterful, No Code and Yield are fantastic, Binaural and Riot Act are decent, the Avocado album and Backspacer are damn good, and the most recent one was kinda shit. That’s a pretty solid discography. They can’t compete with Soundgarden or AiC, sure, but still good. 🤷🏻♂️
