Arcanum of Steamwork and Magic Obscura is a CRPG released in 2001 by Troika Studios. Headed by Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky of Fallout fame Arcanum had some serious firepower in its design. But the game did poorly (possibly because of the inevitably huge number of bugs Troika's games had) and a handful of ardent modders worked to fix the games flaws. Fortunately with the passage of time (and innumerable fan-patches) we can appreciate Arcanum as a classic.
The Steampunk late 1800s setting is richly drawn with intriguing political elements. The characters are interesting and fun to adventure with. The combat is a bit hit-or-miss. Including a real-time mode to the classic Fallout isometric style has a bunch of problems. All in all though Arcanum, if you can overlook some flaws, is a masterpiece in its own right. With the release of multiple isometric style RPGs in the past 15 years the genre has a solid fanbase and Arcanum is rich territory to explore for a sequel. Let me know what you think of Arcanum!
