To answer your question about Beau, he is from rural Florida. He is a former PMC, a former private intelligence operative and security consultant. After leaving that career he became very active in independant media, using his Intel skills for investigative journalism. His channel got started over beers and a bet between himself and several other investigative journalists. It was meant to be a joke, but he went viral a.s.a.p. and now he uses it as a way to reach people who wouldn't normally listen to people with his views.

As a Southerner who was born, raised, and lived for almost 60 years in Alabama, I am disgusted by the need for many here to glorify a mistake. Robert E Lee didn't want monuments to himself. He said that Confederate monuments and flags on display would only serve to not allow the scars to heal and would only fuel further division. I’m also a white southerner and I’ve always felt that flag, even if you discount the racism, is still symbolic of treason and has no place here. I think Beau may have more of a point than you realize. I’m sure there are some people that just don’t know, but most are well aware what it means. I’m sure there are many “nice” southerners you’ve met, but from what I’ve noticed many southerners are big on appearing very friendly but it doesn’t necessarily mean they are good people. I even have family who display that flag that I know for a fact are racist, they’ll be really sweet to a black person and call them the “N” word when they leave. I’m not saying to not trust your friends or that most are like that… I’m just saying that when you see that flag that it’s a pretty good indicator of what they think regardless of how nice they are… which is why it’s important to not use it, because that symbol is almost as universal as a swastika, I promise you. Many will claim not to know, but they do. I’ve personally seen it.

Beau is from Southern Alabama...AKA The Florida panhandle. If you want to help him with his audio, you'd need a time machine though. These are older videos and his audio quality is much better now. Beau is great, I don't agree with him 100% but whether I do or not I always learn something. Following his video on the Russian invasion into Ukraine, I was brought to at least a passing understanding of everything going on since the beginning. Foreign policy in general, Beau is a great source for making me even aware of what's going on and then helps me understand why. As a journalist he has some very good sources that keeps him right on top of things before most people know anything. With politics, he's invaluable. Even someone who disagrees with Beau's opinion on things wholeheartedly could get value listening to him about what's happening in government and the meaning/ramifications of what _could_ happen or even what's _going_ to happen because of that. I was made aware of Covid 19 around November 2019, I started getting prepared for it (masks, toilet paper, other supplies) in February 2020. All thanks to Beau. Even he didn't think it was going to be a big thing for us at first, like in November 2019, but he said it was something to keep an eye on. Then in Dec 2019, Jan. 2020 he was like "Yeah, we need to get ready for this!" His videos on the need for police reform and police conduct are amazing! -Beau served in the military and- in addition to being a journalist another job he used to have was as a special police force instructor in advanced tactics. However, he quit doing that in frustration, I think his sentiment being that the police forces aren't doing the correct training in basic tactics, he's not going to build upon a bad foundation. Exactly. Lived here most of my life and know what I was taught as a kid about the flag and as I got into high school and college and learned the broader meanings I changed how I felt about the flag. And many of the "Southern good old boys" are knowingly Nazi. And not just the young ones. I was at a liquor store shopping and I was the only one there except the shop owner who was old enough to have stark white hair. He asked me what I thought of Hitler. OK, weird leading question but I played along to see what would come out of it. I said, "Well he made the trains run on time." Which is true and is one of the few positive statements I can make about Hitler. (The other is that he started the German Humane Society, Go figure.) He proceeded to wax eloquent on how awesome a person he was. I made my selection and paid and left and didn't shop there again. This was about 25 years ago in TN. I was not a surprised to see the connection come out linking the KKK with the Neo Nazis.

I find the racist then and now to be an embarrassment as well as a minefield & they still do harm at family gatherings. People have to be warned what they are. Many are old but not all.. MR B Very gracious of you to take such an accommodating stance on this. As a white male who has lived between Memphis and smallllll towns in AR and TN respectively, I feel that I more closely align with the speakers POV and can explain why. Growing up in an elementary school system that was somewhere between 50-50 and 60-40 black to white (both students and faculty), I didn't have early exposures to racism. K-4th, before I moved away, my best friend in school was a black girl. However, when my grandparents retired, our small, single parent household followed them to small town AR. Demographics switched to 99% white. The town of 5600-6500 people was rumored to have "no _ after dark" as recently as the early 90s. When I was in 8th grade, circa 2000, I remember classmates checking out of school (like 20% of them) to attend a KKK rally at the town's county courthouse... The school system didn't recognize MLK Jr Day, but they honor Robert E Lee's birthday. Stuff like this may make us overly sensitive to the racial paradigm, which leads to contingents of us feeling the need to overcompensate in our rhetoric as you may perceive this to be; that's how I believe your very measured reaction came across at least. In effect, we're a Southern brand of "wokeness" (cringe and shiver), before the bloody term was popularized and then hijacked. I could go down a rabbit hole expressing my disgust surrounding the narrative that gets spun around the black population (both urban and rural), when class and economic circumstances are bigger factors. News flash: crime still occurs in rural, white America, but when your rent or mortgage is 1/2 to 1/3 the cost of living in a cheaper city like Memphis, then ther is less burden on the working class some criminality is less endemic. There are plenty of rural whites on the dreaded welfare and government, too (not exclusive to urban minorities as some would have you believe). Also, meth is scary AF, but hey, white people.

Give me a flag that all this and no connection (real and/or perceived) to the mistakes we've made. There's real good here, let's not let the our pride in that be misunderstood. I was raised in my home of North Carolina. I love my home and I miss my home greatly. But in no realistic way can I feel comfortable moving back even though Beau gives me some hope. The minute anyone up north hears my southern drawl they immediately associate me with the deep south, ignorant, conservative, maga-aligned fools. It breaks my heart and fills the shattered pieces with hate. Because I'm actually rather progressive and firmly believe that the New South represents progressive political policies. The idea of helping your neighbors, being kind just for the sake of it, looking after your friends and neighbors as if they were family. Ideas like Universal Healthcare (as an example) would be unmistakably southern. Making sure all kids, regardless of ethnicity or religion, has food is also unmistakably southern. I may want the hate filled people to go away just like Beau does, but it is because that it is their ideology that fuels right-wing politicians to do the scumbag things they do and it shouldn't keep happening.

Coming from a North Carolina native who's lived here for 25 years, or most of my life, I can confidently say anybody who flies a Confederate flag that's old enough to drive doesn't have any black friends. Most of them aren't screaming racists, but most of them are outwardly racist to some degree or another among the people they're familiar with. They spread the racism around to Hispanic and Asian people too, but I'm still shocked sometimes by the stuff I overheard working in retail.

Beau’s in Florida now, though it seems he has lived in other parts of the south. He really knows what he’s talking about because he’s perceived as “one of them” so they drop the act around him. He sees the side they might hide around people who they assume would disapprove. The sad truth is that anyone who flies this flag knows. Sure, they can seem like some of the nicest people you’ve met, and sure they may feign ignorance and clutch their pearls when confronted with the flag’s inextricable symbolism of racism… but they won’t ever take it down. Because that’s exactly why they have it up, everything else is just a front. It’s simple… if they were TRULY unaware and are TRULY good, kind people… as soon as they heard this they would take it down and burn it. I've yet to see anyone do that. As far as Beau’s sound quality, this is a 4-year-old video, his production value has improved tremendously over the past year or two. Check out some of his more recent videos. Aside from that, the home spun rustic ambience is part of his whole informal “chatting with a friendly neighbor” vibe. Slick, high-end production would not work well with his lowkey and accessible approach.

I live in Georgia. When I was in high school, the long simmering movement to change the flag finally gained enough support, and the flag was changed from the rebel flag... to the actual historical confederate flag. As a white Southern kid growing up during the "Dukes of Hazzard was still on TV" days, I had Confederate flag tee shirts and never really thought about it much -- I just thought it meant the South and rebellion... I didn't think very hard about what they were rebelling against, i.e. people not wanting them to be able to keep slaves, which is a thing I was NEVER in favor of. Finally, one day I was watching TV and saw a bunch of neo-Nazis waving that flag, and then I realized, "Okay, whatever I THOUGHT that flag meant, it doesn't mean that anymore... not if those bastards are waving it." And that was the last time I ever wore those shirts or displayed any Confederate imagery. Anybody can be ignorant for a while. What's wrong is fighting to maintain that ignorance. When you really think about it and find out what it means, you get rid of it. I know a lot of Southerners try to fight for what *they* think it means, but really, all it would take for any decent person is to find out that they were offending a bunch of people who hadn't done anything to them... and decide "this isn't worth fighting for" and just let it go, out of respect for people... whether you think they're "misunderstanding" it or not. The swastika (inverted) started out as a Buddhist sun sign, not something evil, but given the context of history, it's a lot easier and makes a lot more sense to just not display it than try to explain to absolutely everyone who'd see it what your intentions are, and hope they'll believe you.

Im in the sticks. From 21 down they dont give an eff....be it a mentally challenged possibly autistic person, an foreign born person, a person that speaks differently from the North..... different color etc.... gender random etc. Its truly fascinating BECAUSE IMO this country is about a disaster right now but if all the young folks im around now arent corrupted along the way HOW does it not get better?!?! I aint telling im asking and praying and just telling whats on the ground here in East TN ...im 48 and when i grew up 1 black kid in my K-10 years (im friends on Facebook he lives a mile from me lol) and NO other fifferent folks.....all kids now including my daughter and my grandkids have as many different as same (,when including autistic etc.....those that were destroyed for no reason when i was growing up). I live in Texas. People claim to not be racist. The older generations. Problem is they are. But what they think is acceptable racism is different than mine. There is no acceptable racism. I've been in man arguments to get them to stop saying slurs. They don't say it in a racist way like we would think. It's not "these filthy ____" or " these criminal _____". It's more. Your cousin is f**** a whispers n word. Or they say a black man. They claim to have no problem with them. And even say they aren't more likely this or that or worse in any way. Till you dig deeper. And you find out they have some pretty messed up beliefs. And this has happened to me with dozens of people I've personally met. A few being my family. Most don't fly the flag. But those who do. Are 1 not racist but ultra nationalist and extremely right wing. Or 2 are racist but don't want to feel judged or shunned. They view people as a collective in a way. They will say it's heritage, or how they were raised, or things were different in the past about how we thought about things. On and on the excuses go. Until the mask slips. Like not talking to your daughter because she had a Mexican baby. They feel disgraced. They feel personally attacked. They see you as an extension of them. They try to use statistics without their context once openly confronted and feel comfortable enough to try and convince you instead. They wouldn't mind blacks and Mexicans... If they kept to their own. Their own.... Country, or people, or just away from them. I used to believe the rebel myth myself. But the facts are the facts. And it does create very racist thoughts. Edit: this isn't limited to blacks and Mexicans. My GF is asian. Chinese ethically. Though never been to China. A lot of people hate her. And we've both seen a lot of racist stuff since trump. And especially since COVID. The China virus. The ching Chong. Making the same danm joke every time they talk casually about Asians. How do Asians name their kids? By dropping a pan on the floor. I don't mind jokes but every time they talk about Asians they blame the Chinese for COVID. I get the government but not the people. And hate crimes in my area against Asians has gotten to horrible levels.

Here’s the thing, though. I’m a white, middle-aged Texan. I have a bald head and drive a large truck (because I actually need a large truck). It would shock you to hear what those “nice Southern white people” who go out of their way to fly Lee’s battle flag say about black people, right after they tell you they have a black friend. When they think you are “one of the club”, because you happen to look like them, you’ll realize pretty quick what they really think about black people. Just because they will come to your cookout, or let their kids play with yours, or sit in the cubicle next to yours without yelling racial slurs through the walls don’t mean they think you are equal. Contrary to popular belief, Confederate memorabilia doesn’t grow out of the ground in the South. If someone is sporting racist swag, it’s because they paid good money for it. The looked for it and bought it. It has no utility other than sending a message. They aren’t making bread or cutting grass with it. It doesn’t get them to and from work. When people tell you who they are, it’s wise to listen to them. A lot of them are just waiting on permission to reveal the worst versions of themselves. You have to fight that genie every day, disillusion them of your inclusion into their “club”, and push back against hateful ideas at every opportunity. No hall passes for bigotry and hate.

One of the big issues with the statues is that, like with the Georgia flag including the battle flag, pretty much all of them were put up after Brown v. Board, and for the same purpose as the flag change, so they're not really "history." Same goes for Stone Mountain, it's less than 60 years old, though you are right, nothings going to happen there. Maybe if they went with the super racist original plan of Nathan Bedford Forrest rather than Lee, Davis, and Jackson. I was born and raised here and sometimes I think we'd be much better off if Sherman didn't just march to the sea, but instead turned around afterwards and ping ponged around a bit more.
