Hello and welcome to Old Ways Gardening and Prepping.🍀 Would like to welcome you each out to the back part of the backyard. Here is where the jungle grows thickly and organically. Oh about 3 years ago I was hoping that these grapevines were muscadines but they ended up being fox grapes.
Some of the most common wild grape species found in North America are fox grape (V. labrusca), summer grape (V. aestivalis), and possum/riverbank grape (V. riparia). Wild grapes can be found along streams, ponds, roads, and in open woods climbing up trees. They are wonderful for making homemade grape juice, grape jelly and also freeze very well. They are very important to many pollinators. Also very beneficial to birds and almost all wildlife as a food source.
They are found growing wild up North down the East coast and over to the Mississippi river and down in to Texas.
Most also don't know that the wild fox grapes are also medicinal. The leaves are hepatic. An infusion has been used in the treatment of diarrhoea, hepatitis, stomach aches, fevers, headaches and thrush. Externally, the leaves are poulticed and applied to sore breasts, rheumatic joints and headaches. The wilted leaves have been applied as a poultice to the breasts to draw away soreness after the birth of a child.
Hope this video encourages you to also look for the wild fox grapes. Now will admit once they start becoming ripe you will have to remember to harvest responsibly and leave some for the wildlife unless they beat you to them. If you have any questions please feel free to ask them in the comment section below I will answer them as soon as possible. Take care and have a blessed day.
Blessings,
Teresa
