Hi Rusty! I always enjoy and am inspired by your videos. As you are undoubtedly aware, this mixing of the major and minor pentatonic scales is the "secret sauce" utilized by some of the greatest blues guitarists, including, but not limited to B.B. King, Clapton, and Duane Allman. It is the key to eliminating monotony and adding freshness and spice to solos. And sparing use of chromatic runs adds some extra zest.

I’m glad the lessons inspire you! But your comment here really inspired me! Really gets me thinking how our guitar heroes put together memorable solos. And most of them basically a simple structure! I always like digging in to how they thought about it. I really appreciate the comment. Talk to you soon. Thanks 👍

After 28 years as a pentatonic hack in a classic cover hobby band, I discover Rusty's channel, and the veil starts to lift from my eyes. I enjoy your stuff. It relates well to what I already know....and it's helping me improve...after playing since 1969. T/Y.

I’m glad to hear that David! We probably like a lot of the same classic rock guitar tunes. Just a few fresh connections to the Pentatonic scale can make a big big difference. We will keep working on the stuff in 2024! Talk to you soon.👍

Really like the Guernsey Cow pattern Strat! Really great lesson! I've been practicing playing chord progressions using only the 5 major and minor pantatonic shapes in all the different keys. It has enabled me to impervise all over the neck using almost every fret top to bottom! Once playing 1, 4,5, progressions in a key, using only all 10 major and minor pantatonic shapes together in a continuous progression, I start creating riffs in each pattern! Thanks so much for all your hard work and commitment. Your guitar playing and teaching just keeps getting better and better! 🖐️👍

This is good because it’s what I’m working on right now. But really I’ve been working on it for about 40 years because my first lesson somebody wrote down the major and minor pentatonic boxes. Now I know all the scales and all the modes but sounding like I can play still escapes me mostly. I just sound like I’m playing the scale. I thought your diagram was interesting because it’s only one note really different from the Dorian mode in the major scale or the second position, or the third position in the minor scale. Drives me crazy. I’m doing 3 note per string scales also. Thx!
@rustysguitar1
Жыл бұрын
I still work on the stuff every day myself also! It sounds like you know the scales. So work on three or four note phrases with Endo scales. If you practice playing up and down the scale, that’s how you will sound when you improvise. Work on these small phrases with spacing between over backing tracks. And listen to some other players that are doing that. Keep working at it my friend.👍

I see a new Rusty video, I watch, then I like. Simple.
Yet another great eye opening lesson and I'm only in under 2 minutes. First question - from the C7 do you choose the F9 & G9 because they are closer than the F7 & G7? Next ask - I enjoy your tone/sound - advice for finding/learning tones would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your response. As always thank you for sharing your experience knowledge and passion for those of us trying to make music!
@rustysguitar1

Thanks Chuck, the 7 chord and a 9 chord are interchangeable. I chose the 9 chords because a lot of blues players use that chord. But how you improvise over them is the same. I have a few different amps, and I always set them clean. Then I will drive the amp with an overdrive pedal. And add a little reverb. That’s my basic sound for my videos and live. But I’ve had other questions about my tone, and I will do a video soon. Thanks so much for the comment and all of your questions. I appreciate your support buddy. Talk to you soon.👍

Hey Rusty, I can see the notes you are playing for the F9--notes of the F chord, but is it the same for the G9? What notes are you playing there? And would there be a difference for a dominant 7 blues...like would you go to the 7 of each chord more than the 9 (the second)? And would you play more minor than major over dominant 7? Because here you are playing major pentatonic notes a little more than minor it seems.
@rustysguitar1

I use the major box most of the time over the G9 chord. But the major and minor sound work well over all of the chords! There really are no rules. Thanks a lot for watching my videos! Catch you later mate 👍 Cheers 👌
