Original foldable found in MC0760, the Unlocking History Research Group archive, Massachusetts Institute of Technology Libraries (MIT), box 18.
The Book of Locks folds into a booklet with five internal pockets for storing locked letters. The Book of Locks is not just a collection of props; it is an interactive experience. It features a series of specially crafted items by the Unlocking History Research Group for Diana Henderson Ph.D.’s course Writing with Shakespeare. In this unique seminar, participants can write with quills, and most importantly, lock and unlock the letterpackets. These props are not just for show but also prompt reflection and encourage a deeper understanding of the content.
Unlocking History team members invented the letterpackets contained within the Book of Locks for a play in Venice (2016) and an event at the Research in Action programme at Shakespeare’s Globe (July 2019). For more on this research, see Daniel Starza Smith and Jana Dambrogio, “Unfolding action: letters as props in the early modern theatre,” in Early British Drama in Manuscript, eds Tamara Atkin and Laura Estill (Brepols, 2019).
Produced by MIT Video Production. Directed and demonstrated by Jana Dambrogio. Locked letter design by Jana Dambrogio and Daniel Starza Smith. Special thanks to MIT Video Production staff, Diana Henderson, Erica Zimmer, Will Tosh, actors at Shakespeare’s Globe, and Jordi Rocha. Funded by the Seaver Institute and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Libraries in support of our project, “Unlocking History.”
