Why your herbs and cool weather vegetables“bolt” or go to seed and what that means.
Questions raised but not answered in video:
1- Both tomatoes and peppers are wind-pollinated, though bees can also pollinate these plants.
2- Cilantro tends to bolt when soil temperatures exceed 70 degrees - not 85 as I mentioned in video.
3- Tomatoes and cilantro and not commonly considered companion plants as they may compete for same nutrients. Several studies observed more stunted tomato plants when grown in same grow-box as cilantro.
Ways to postpone herbs from bolting:
1- Harvest frequently and cut back flowers or tall central shoots.
2- Plant in cool weather / early in season. In my garden I can get cilantro goin in early March and again in the fall.
3- High nitrogen fertilize may assist in leafy growth versus flower growth though you wouldn’t want to fertilize many of your vegetables this way.
4- Mulching top of soil may help in retaining moisture in soil and keeping temperatures lower.
