Anything can spark an electrical fire, special.. I mean beautiful people. But if you look just a bit harder, you'll see the orange/red parts of the switch when he clicked them, and on the plug you'll see the 3rd prong, it's a "ground". This means any power surge one way or the other, will automatically trigger the connection to close... i.e.. Stopping the current from causing major damage. It may burn the outlet, or melt the connection of the item you're using, but that's usually the most extent of the damage. Let's not be so quick to find flaws and failures in others and their ideas. Uplift don't Tear Down 😉

Um, you do know that a wide variety of trusted brands offer an even wider variety of high quality, well engineered retractable drop cords in a large selection of lengths, shapes, sizes, configurations, etc. They are reasonably priced, and will not fail and potentially cause damage like this...cobbled up contraption.

4 bucks at harbor freight for a cord holder. You don't want to put small circles into an extension cord. Hang em in 3 or 3.5 ft loop and make each loop smaller slightly. Last turn in the cord is 2 ft for a 50

I made one of these a few years ago for a camper shore line. Only problem is plug won't rotate in his design.. your male end comes out of the neck, and the female end comes out of the hole in the middle (no outlet) just plug end.. Actually works real well and keeps wire from twisting.

A better idea is to feed the end of the cord through the winder tube and put a female socket on the end. You won't be twisting anything up then.
