It's really bad. Been here 5 years in an SRO. Employed full-time and can't afford another place. Terrible for families with kids (bad bathrooms too). The YMCA is the only place for them to have activities. Government doesn't care. 4+ year waiting list for government housing. Jobs are in SF (so commuting is impossible). I know this area well. SRO's should be remodeled, but developers won't allow it. Rent control and landlords are stuck. Even City College is being cut, so no classes for people to educate themselves.

What about Swiss American hotel Sro in Chinatown near north beach? That one looks nice
Such a hard way to live. Sadly it illustrates how expensive California is and San Francisco in particular.

You will be surprised. Housing in China is much more expensive per square feet compared to the local average salary. Plus there's no such thing affordable housing provided by government over there.

Why do people live in San Francisco? I love visiting California however I can't afford it.

I lived there for about 30 years, unable to buy, we got priced out of rentals. The way to live in San Francisco is to find a rent controlled apartment and never move. That's how my renter friends who still live there do it. Just like NYC

@@therealityofthings9574 i moved to San Diego. It's much less expensive renting, but CA is expensive anyway. Still, our old bay area apartment just rented for 2200, and we have a rent now of 1345. So it is a little easier to manage here.

Let's take an objective look at this situation and crunch a few numbers. If she and her husband work, and I'm assuming they both do since Chinese people, as well as Latinos, are known to be hard workers, in San Francisco currently (2023) the minimum per hour you are paid is $17 dlls. ( X 2 persons X 40 hours per week X 52 weeks per year / 12 months equals $5,893.33 per month income) and they might be receiving Government assistance for each child ($500 X 4 children equals $2,000 per month assistance) plus food stamps, plus other programs, around $1,000 a month extra (and probably rent assistance which I'm not including in this analysis). So, let's add that: $5,893.33 plus $2,000 plus $1,000 that amounts to a probable combined monthly income of: $8,893.33 (family income of $106,719.96 per year) or after deducting the $700 per month rent they must have a balance of $8,193.33 income each month or ( X 12: $98,319.96 per year). If they get no assistance at all of any kind, then they have a combined income of $5,893.33 (X 12 months equal to $70,719.96 per year) or after deducting the $700 monthly rent equal to $5,193.33 monthly balance (X 12 months equal to: $62,319.96 per year). Not bad, either $106,719.96 with Government assistance or $70,719.96 per year if they get no Government assistance of any kind. I think they can afford to rent a larger place to live if they wanted to. Also, I respect their decision to live there and save as much as they can of their income, but then they would have no reason to complain. And I wouldn't label their situation as "poverty". Anyway, nobody can judge the decision by other people about the number of children they want to have. .

How much is childcare there? You're missing the fact that the lady in the video did NOT work f/t because she had to care for her youngest daughter and grandma is back in China so can't take care of her.

@@Anthro777 : She works just part time and the father doesn't work, if he did they could get at least $800 per week. They are just abusing the system.

The San Francisco Standard KZitem channel profiled a family of six living in an SRO. After nine years of living in a 100-square-foot SRO, they finally received Section 8 housing vouchers and moved into a four-bedroom apartment on Nob Hill. Thirty percent of their income will pay for housing while Section 8 vouchers pay for the rest.

SRO means single resident occupancy. So, why are there couples, families, and extended families living in them? I would think that is illegal.
@RaymondHng

Considering the number of families living in SROs, it's obviously not illegal.
