Lincoln Financial Field - A Story of Cheesesteak, VIP Rooms, and Bad Luck
Lincoln Financial Field or “The Linc” is home to the Philadelphia Eagles of the NFL. The stadium opened in 2003 as a replacement for the aging Veterans Stadium. The stadium was constructed over a two year period, and designed with many improvements over its predecessor. Some of these upgrades included twice as many luxury and wheelchair accessible seats, larger video display boards, and over 600 feet of LED ribbon boards. Naming rights to the new stadium were purchased by the Lincoln Financial Group, which paid $139.6 million dollars over a 21 year period. Total cost to build the stadium came in at a staggering half a billion dollars.
The stadium officially opened with a game between Manchester United and FC Barcelona, and hosted its first Eagles game later that month in a preseason matchup. The first regular season game would come on September 8th, 2003 when Eagles lost to the visiting Buccaneers 17-0. Although the Eagles got off to a rough start, the stadium seemed to be a good luck charm to the team early in as it played host to the NFC Championship game two years in a row, with the Eagles advancing to the Super Bowl after the Jan 23, 2005 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons.
Since its opening, the stadium has gained a positive reputation amongst fans and visitors around the NFL, although the stadium did have a controversy in its inaugural season when stadium management banned cheesesteaks and hoagie sandwiches due to security concerns. The ban famously only lasted one week after widespread universal mockery.
Lincoln Financial Field boasts 172 Luxury Suites which can be rented for between $75,000 and $300,000. These suites combined hold a staggering 3,040 luxury seats, making them popular for corporate retreats. The stadium has two private Club Lounges for luxury suite members which include a full service bar, a large number of TVs, and even cheerleader visits.
Other interesting facts about the stadium include the entire complex sits on a 15 acre site, both club lounges account for 80,000 square feet of party space, there are 22 merchandise stores stationed around the stadium, and front row seats sit a mere 60 feet from the sidelines.
Lincoln Financial Field received its first major renovations in 2013 with the addition of new HD video boards, upgraded stadium sound, and wifi coverage for the entire stadium.
