Willie Nelson probably put it best when he said, "There are only two kinds of men in the world, those who have a crush on Linda Ronstadt and those who have never heard of her." @@donnaadler5296 I've done some research on this and have found Linda Ronstadt's name in the above quote about ten times more than Emmylou's. Willie performed with both of them, and I think that Willie might say that the same compliment could be true of both women. So actually, I think it's probable that he said something similar about each of them. The one pertaining to Emmylou is slightly different, usually stated this way: "There are two kinds of men in this world... Yes, Ronstadt had it all: the pipes, the technique, the feels… She was the biggest singer of her generation. To get a feel for her more rock side, try “You’re No Good” and “When Will I Be Loved,” both huge hits. Her first song to make it big was “Different Drum,”with the group The Stone Poneys (spelled that way). Ronstadt did almost all genres, from country to rock to pop, plus jazz standards and even operetta: she starred in The Pirates of Penzance on Broadway. Of part-Mexican descent, she did at least one album in Spanish that was also a major hit. She’s also responsible for the founding of the super group, The Eagles. The loss of her voice as she aged, due to Parkinson’s Disease, is a tragedy.

She started out in the late 60s w pop rock country band called the Stone Ponies: "A Different Drum ", and her first huge hit a ballad called "Long Long Time". By the 70s she had gathered some musician friends that that were more rock inspired. The performed a mix of country music which created a crossover sound at the time. Her backing band would become the legendary So Cal group The Eagles! Linda took on many cover songs from Buddy Holly, Roy O, the Rolling Stones which proved she could rock as well. She's one of two singers I know that have mastered most musical genres including opera. So more Linda reactions please!

Great reaction as always! One of the greatest singers there ever was. Her catalog and hits are forever long! She was the first female artist to fill stadiums. Long Time (one of her signature songs, featured in The Last of Us and TRENDING) and Desperado (written the Eagles). Her backing band became The Eagles. 38 Top-100 singles, 38!!

HBK Luke Ms. Linda Ronstadt is and will ALWAYS be one of the Top 5 Best Female Voices of All Time. She is better than Celine Dion and Adele, as great as each one is. Those great singers stay in 'their lane' and do awesome work there. However, Linda had NO problem venturing out to other genres of music. Sure, she might have been afraid to fail or not be as good as she was in one. There is NO genre of music she did not attempt to sing in that she didn't FREAKING succeed in: country, pop, rock, folk, Mexican Mariachi, and even classical musical theater. Women like Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton (With which she toured and put out albums with as The Trio) would humbly and honestly admit how much better she was than each of them. Jackson Browne and The Eagles (which she helped create) have admitted to the Greatness of voice and talent of Linda Ronstadt. All of those artists are Great and VERY talented in their own right and yet... YET... they recognize the magnitude of the talent and power of Linda Ronstadt!! Anyone or any list in which she is not in the Top 5 or Top 10 (at least) is NOT a person or list to trust as unbiased and fair.

I like how you describe the simple feeling of the song and story. Her memoir is called Simple Dreams, which is named after a song by JD Souther that she also sang beautifully. Here, she is just starting out on her unbelievable and extensive career. I especially like the recordings she did with Aaron Neville. Her voice sounds so pristine on those recordings.

My Mom always had a Linda Ronstadt 8 track playing in the car when I was a kid and she could sing and hit every single note flawlessly with Linda - I always wished she would've recorded an album!

She sang briefly with the Eagles. Saw her in concert outside of Baltimore in 1977. Magical night. Crowd into the performance. She's also sang in a trio with Dolly Parton and Emmy Lou Harris. Definitely worth listening to that. Unfortunately as she's gotten older she has given up singing due to illness. One of the best ever.

About Linda Rondstat. Probably the best mezzo-soprano ever to lend her voice to popular music. ❤

Love this song, one of my mum's favorites, you're so right about her voice, i can only think of two more vocalists that make me feel a similar way, and that's Karen Carpenter and Olivia Newton-John, they could give you sweetness and power and make both sound beautiful with their warm tones, i'll never get tired of their gorgeous voices.

Linda's tonal quality is spot on. She hits every note dead perfect 100% of the time, but that is not the only thing that makes this song so great. Her emotional engagement with the lyrics catapults it to a higher level. The slight quaver in her voice as the song begins, and at other appropriate times evokes the sadness, the loneliness of those lyrics. And her abrupt change in power and volume at the phrase "I'm going back some day" evoke the hope, the determination to escape the sad condition immediately proceeding that. What a Great interpretation of one of the best songs of the 20th century. Thank you, Ms Ronstadt, for giving us that.

My parents had this album and many others that are now considered classics. And we had whatever best stereo system back then too. Dad was an audiophile. My sister and I were raised on everything from Motown to Country to Rock to Disco. I grew up to be a hardcore Metalhead, but... I still love Linda and Olivia Newton-John. They are still 2 of the best female vocalists of our time.

Dolly Parton said about Linda Ronstadt "That girl can sing anything", and she just about sang every genre of song to perfection.
