Hi Bonnie, I would like to know the type of your machine. :) It seems to me it is not an industrial machine yet a strong one. And also would like to know how did you put the zipper slider back. Thank you! I like the sewing trick at the corners, that is really new for me!

Happy you found some tips you could use. Yes, the machine I use, Janome 1600P, is heavy duty but not as big or loud as an industrial. It is a mechanical straight stitch machine. It goes forward and back, only a straight stitch no zigzag. If you sew a lot of straight seams, like quilting, or use heavy fabrics, this is a strong, dependable machine. HandiQuilter has a Stitch 510 machine that I believe is the same under different branding. AS for installing the zipper, here's a video that has a different way of attaching than I do, but it looks much simpler and more consistent. It does take practice and can be frustrating, so be patient. :) Happy sewing! kzitem.info/news/bejne/mat8qGV6qYqUg44

That butting up on the corners is brilliant; no matter now much I try to box corners perfectly its easy for the fabric to slip and be "off" just a bit, which I hate! I will try this method!

I created that same pattern a year ago. Easy enough since it's like many others. The correct term for the corners is not gusset, but "boxed" corners, and the correct name for the ziper end is also not gusset, but "zip tab", or "zip end"... A gusset is actually a long piece of fabric that goes from top to top, all around the side of the bag giving it a side wall, as opposed to a simple front and back, it adds another dimension and width without the need for boxing corners. Pretty bag. I made several this week that look very similar.

Thank you for watching. The technique for the corners is boxed corner, and you are correct, it's not technically a gusset, but simply creates the depth to the bag. Regarding the zip end, when I said gusset it wasn't referring to the zip end, but rather stating the piece you cut from the panels to create the "gusset" can be used to make the zip end. I hope that clarifies that portion of the video if it wasn't clear.

Hi Bonnie.....just found your channel today-6.6.22....thanks for sharing this. Question: is there a particular seam allowance for the boxed corners?
@AlohaBonnie
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Lynette, I use a solid 1/4" seam allowance on boxed corners. I find this is sufficient for stability (I do back track a few times on the edges), I don't have to trim it down, saving time, and if I go larger, it will start to change the proportions of the bag. Hope this helps you, happy sewing :)

Thank you for watching. The cork was available for a limited time as the designer sold her personal stock. It's beautiful and I wish I had purchased more as I'm all out and customers love it. The wooden tags come from WearHouse Industries on Etsy. Great service, I recommend them.

Love the tips, thank you! However, honestly, right at the very end when you’re supposedly showing the difference between the 2 techniques - there’s no visible difference! They are both wide open! I do not see the difference at all?!? Regardless, I like the look and am going to give everything a try. Thanks for sharing.
@bonniemccann1513

Thank you Debbie for watching, and the feedback. You're correct, at the end it's very difficult to see any difference. While sewing, you will really see and feel the difference when you do the topstitching right after zipper install versus at the very end. The side seams lay flatter and smoother, and there is no resistance at all when opening the pouch when topstitching at the very end. If you do the topstitching right after zip install, there is a little more resistance to opening wide. If you use a stiff fabric, it can be very noticeable. Also, if you don't trim the seam allowances carefully, the side seam where the zipper starts, can get bulky quickly and not have as smooth a zipper operation. Again, thank you!
