Well besides the crappy CD-i Link, in Link’s Awakening, he’s seen talking to Marin when she wakes him up in the house. That’s what pisses me off, people can’t consider dialogue as Link talking. No, they want a VOICE.

Nintendo took out Link’s dialogue because he was being controlled by the player and they wanted the player to have the ‘dialogue’. Instead he became our mute hero we all adore. Also how would the NPC know what he wanted or needed if he couldn’t talk. If you read the manga’s you’ll have some insight to how link actually acts. It’s rather funny and I highly recommend it.

Let’s not forget that in the original Japanese version of BotW (not sure about TotK but probably) all the text in the quest logs are written in first person. Technically this doesn’t count as talking since it’s written, but it’s a neat detail that got lost in translation.

imagine if after the great calamity, link had vocal cord damage so he can’t talk in botw or totk, so he communicates in sign language instead. mute people can’t form words, but they CAN make noises sometimes, and that really fits link. i know it’s not canon, but the idea would be cool edit: id like to imagine hyrulean sign language would be different from asl or jsl

i take the gestures he makes when talking to npcs and dialogue that we choose as him doing hylian sign language. it makes a lot more sense. like, i mean yeah he could talk, but it feels a lot more natural. given that he doesn’t usually talk around people besides zelda and maybe the champions of old, may the rest in peace, and that he always uses his hands to speak, plus all of the most likely BLARING enemy screeches, all the times he’s probably taken explosions up close, the times he’s probably taken a tumble down a hill or two, perhaps has been unexpectedly avalanched on by rocks-he’s probably at least half deaf and probably finds it easier to sign. take it as a big big headcanon. miyamoto did leave him silent so that it was up to player interpretation and to it could be more immersive, and i’m immersing myself :D

Also, in the memory you get at Sanidin Park, “To Mount Lanayru” when Zelda says “Be sure to take the time to sooth your mount. It’s the only way to show it how you really feel.” That’s actually in parentheses, and with her following it up with adressing Link and saying “your advice was very helpful, thank you.” That’s a direct quote from our Hero of the Wild! (The wording wasn’t exactly the same here, though. I’m not perfect)

I write Link as mostly nonverbal and being really expressive in other ways, such that everyone around him can just… instinctively understand what he wants to communicate. He _can_ talk when there’s something complex he has to get across, but talking for a long time makes him uncomfortable, so he prefers not to.

Link may not have a voice, but he does talk. Whenever you select a dialogue option in BOTW, that is what he say to the npc. He lost his memory after, he probably does remember why he went silent, or even that he did. He probably does in every games after OoT and MM too. Link isn't an empty shell for the player to impersonate anymore, he's his own character with his own emotion independent of the player, we follow his story now. I wish they showed that more in TOTK, especially at the end.
@ViviMagri

Omg I really find it bizarre that so many ppl still have any kind of doubt he talks. OF COURSE he talks. In BOTW, for example, you don't have just this example, but many other mentions, and also he's always gesticulating to explain things to NPCs etc. HE'S SIMPLY NOT VOCALIZED (to keep that "the player can fill his part"). That's very simple and very different to not talking.

Link does talk in pretty much every 3d game. Its just they dont give him a text box. But if you actually read the dialog, theres dozens of instances where the character whos talking to you reacts to links response. He also usually does a gesture. Twilight princess has a lot of these instances, oot has a couple too. Idk why people act like link is non verbal. He is, but nintendo wanted to make him silent to add to the feel of the game. He does talk to people, but they just dont give him a text box.
