Thank you. Well when I was in our local oil supplier, I spotted it on the shelf so thought it would be just the thing...inexpensive as well.

First! (sorry, I had to lol.) These old Lister Ds are virtually indestructible.

Actually second LOL as I was first.....yes strong old engines, lots made and lots have survived. Still being found in sheds and barns after being unused for years. Because there are so many, and inexpensive, many people have a 'collection'.

Born a farmer, I remember these engines fitted to Lister wooden hay elevators, I don't ever remember our getting an oil change. Oil is oil Malc, no matter how technical it is, engines don't go for long without, use a bit of common sense, throw it in and ignore silly wife's tales.
@MalcOfLincoln

That's how I remember these engines. Playing with friends in the farmyard at threshing time. Oil is simply to keep metal apart and keep it from overheating. However while back at agricultural engineering college on a 2 month course, we had an evening lecture and demonstration by a Castrol representative. Something I've always remembered and in fact there are many additives in engine oils. One in particular is to stop catastrophic wear on the camshaft and followers. Like microscopic ball bearings. Just prior to this I had used some cheap reclaimed oil from the local garage in my motorbike. Ruined the engine in 2 or 3 weeks. Just one of life's early lessons.

this may seem like a strange question but can a Lister d run both directions?
@MalcOfLincoln
5 жыл бұрын
Yes there are reverse direction ones Scott. It is possible to reverse the direction. Just swap the carb and exhaust, and turn the mag round...or alter the cam inside. I've read the inlet and exhaust valves are not the same, but it would run for demonstration. There are so many of these engines here, hence the cheap price. People play and do all sorts to them. I've seen a fuel injected one.

sae30 morris oils does a classic oil especially made for these old engines, no detergents just good old fashioned oil like it supposed to be. these engines have no oil filter so dont need modern oils, any dirty particles end up in the sump not floating around the engine. look up morris classic oil, do your engine a favour.

Cheers Andy. Hope you've had a good Christmas 😊 Other than checking to see the oil level was correct, it's the first time I've actually looked at it. As long as they've got oil it's not that important on these old engines. However, it was a nice surprise to see how clean it is inside.

@MalcOfLincoln

Exactly. The other day I did try running it a bit longer to warm her up. I did hear a noise, nothing drastic, could have been piston, big end, loose tappet. You know how these noises migrate, so most likely down to the crud being previously removed to fill the gaps. This engine just keeps getting better and better.

Yeah, if I'd know how slow it was to fill, probably would have done LOL. BUT look how nice and clean it is inside. Got to be one of the better ones. Really hope this doesn't just end up in the skip if something happens to me.
