Michael once again - this really is gold. Sailing Magic Carpet recently did an awesome KZitem on how to shoot, tools to use and more. She is camera talented and just generally talented. He is a boat building wiz. They are so nice you’d love them. I immediately thought there is soooo much more to getting a KZitem video out
@SailingGently

Tom thank you and for the Magic Carpet suggestion I will go and have a look at their site - There is quite a lot involved in 'creating' a KZitem video but actually it's a process I thoroughly enjoy - Having spent my life on the 'creative' side of broadcast TV if's really fun to get down and dirty with the practicality and technical side - very steep learning curve - Audio is particularly difficult and a lot of sound recordists back in the day must have found me 'irritating' as s director who did not understand their department properly!

Another excellent episode!! Honest, personal, thoughtful, soul searching and immensely informative. I was reminded of the episodes in my life where I've lived on houseboats in London, permanently moored motor cruisers amid the maze of waterways in Fort Lauderdale (an enormous subculture of boatyards, painting sheds and hundreds of marine related trades); living aboard sailboats in Antibes and Villefranche in the South of France and Rye, NY. I'm now looking for a boat (35-35 foot Beneteau or Pearson) to base in the Samana peninsula in the northeast corner of the Dominican Republic near Las Terrenas where my wife and I have an apartment. There's a beautiful small marina in Samana and a yard in Puerto Plata (where I can park on the hard and undertake maintenance).From either place I can fly back to the United States in a couple of hours whenever I have a photography assignment. Speaking of which, I've noticed a dramatic growth in people living aboard in marinas - working remotely via the marina's wifi or in nearby cafes. The evolution of technologies like Elon Musk's Starlink make the possibility of affordable satellite communications and truly remote work feasible.
@SailingGently

Max I really enjoyed reading your 'post' - nice to hear from another 'sailor' with similar experiences... I remember well the liveaboard sub culture and the boating industry which is mainly small companies servicing people who want it done for the lowest cost possible - I hadn't thought about the American boat people but of course Skipper Bob would not be able to sell all his ICW books unless it was a pretty big group... Las Terranas with a smaller boat sounds perfect - I visited Samana bay a couple of times (Whales were amazing) but tended to stop for longer in Luperon - which is one of my favourite places. I have downsized to a Beneteau 323 which I am really enjoying as she is so easy to park single handed and am currently looking for the best way to get her from northern France to Martinique - so I can liveaboard all winter and cruise the area. Your right that working from the boat is much more possible nowadays and maybe I should have spoken about that - In most of Europe the WIFI is pretty dreadful in marinas but that will change and if Starlink is not too expensive that will be a game changer -

David I cannot imagine what 125 is like! The most I was ever out in was 60knots off Cadiz with a tiny corner of jib out and hanging on like mad! Double that is terrifying.. I am in Spain at the moment and don't know how my boat fared in it's marina in Boulogne - it is behind lock gates so no swell but I bet she was bent over the pontoon and like yours has some superficial damage - can't wait to get back and check on her

To add something in terms of financing: if you are able to work 100% remote all you need is good internet access on the anchorage... covid actually speed that up and many pepople work fully remote nowadays which opens a whole bunch of new opportunities. What do yo think of working full time remotely from the boat?

Very honest video, thank you...but regarding your comment that you always needed to get ashore after awhile... I wonder if your boats were just too small? By modern standards 36-39ft is a small cruising boat and many couples live on 48-56ft boats now, which effectively doubles the space. Cramped living conditions in any environment becomes claustrophibic after some time and larger yachts give you the room to enjoy space and privacy, quite apart from increased comfort and seaworthyness. Your view?
@SailingGently
Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure Nicholas. My previous boat was a Westerly ocean 43 which is pretty spacious and very comfortable and sea worthy... but I wouldn't want to live in her 365.. I think it's more to do with lifestyle and of course 'different strokes for different folks'...

Do you know how far from shore a boat would have to be off the coast of USA to be beyond its legal domain? I don't mean where a crime has been committed, but for example, if the USA goes to war, executive orders allow the govt to seize any personal property. Anyone so inclined can look this up.
