A documentary about the Human Elephant conflict in West Midnapore district, of West Bengal, the importance of coexistence, and the need to support the forest department and the villagers.
In the forested parts of Bengal’s West Midnapore district, man is at a face-off with one of the world’s largest mammal, the Elephant. Every day, every hour, and every inch of land, is a fight for survival. For many centuries, elephants have roamed this forest of South West Bengal which has no natural corridor, yet they have passed on their knowledge of the routes to their young ones. but today, their routes are now marked as fields and for many and it is their source of livelihood. Livelihood for the humans and food for the elephants, and that’s the core of the ensuing run-in between man and elephant. And that too, at an unimaginable level, Life and death. As herds are chased from village to village as they raid fields, crops, houses, and granaries inside the villages for food, it is a mammoth task for the forest department to mitigate and manage this conflict, with it extremely meagre or no resources.
"Living with elephants" is a narrative, by Sashidhar Vempala, (Founder of Guardbook Conservation Foundation) on this conflict, which also exists all over India where elephants and humans come in contact, hoping to raise awareness on the seriousness of the issue and the challenges faced by the three parties, elephants, villagers and the forest department.
