You must have seen many mushrooms and enjoyed some good eating over the years, Tim Billings! In some parts of North America, the Lobster mushrooms age really fast and get pretty buggy inside. But when they are dense and firm, they are such a good mushroom. Not a strong flavor, but they can seem like a completely different mushroom depending on how you cook them. But getting them really cooked is key, in my opinion anyway. Happy mushroom hunting!

I'm so glad to hear you are enjoying nature's bounty that's just waiting for us out there! It does take time to figure out new spots when you move. When I moved to the Willamette Valley from Michigan, it felt like starting all over again, especially getting to know the western species that are almost, but not quite, like the ones in Eastern North America. And the seasonal differences took some getting used to, too. But looking for new areas never stops, either. I'm in the Eugene area and I'm always looking for new spots, too! The wild university property by the river is pretty good for some things. There's a lot of Black Locust flowers there at the right time of spring!

Hi my friend. Happy to see your video today, I missed you and all your wonderful tours and recipes. I don't know if you remember me, Lark. We have now moved into a senior living community. We do have 'wild areas', wet and dry. I have thought of you very, very often. You have taught me a lot. I remember the simple and basics. Many of the people here in our senior community are finding it very interesting and funny watching me out their windows forging for my greens. They think of me as the 'young' old person...probably a 'crazy hippie'. :0) I forgot, is your name Chris? Where do you look for these kind of mushrooms? I am in southeastern Wisconsin, zone 5. I am not confident in picking wild mushrooms. I have been looking for morels, but have had no luck finding them here. I wish I had you to come and walk with me. You are a wealth of knowledge and the kind of lady I would love to 'hang out' with. Take care my friend. Stay safe and healthy.

What a nice surprise to hear from you, Lark! I go by Chris, or Holly, or Holly Chris. I so much enjoyed your video tours of your gardens and natural areas. I hope you enjoy fond memories of the nature you took care of for many years. It's nice that you have wild areas at your new location, too! And that you are busy foraging! :D You could find Lobster mushrooms in late summer or early autumn near you. They've been found in southeast Wisconsin south of Waukesha and northern Illinois in the Chicago area. It takes a mature forest. Wisconsin has so many great wild mushrooms and wild edible plants. I just checked your channel and see that you have been posting recently. I just recall that you were having troubles posting videos, but that was awhile ago. I'll have to catch up with your new gardens and natural areas. Happy foraging and gardening!

@HaphazardHomestead
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Debra B! I don't think anyone cultivates these. Lobster mushrooms do grow all over Pennsylvania and the surrounding states, so that's good news for you. They are in healthy mature forests, because the host mushrooms have a relationship with the tree roots. And then the parasite Hypomyces comes in and infects the hosts. You can find Lobster mushrooms for sale in some markets that carry wild mushrooms, including dried ones. I hope you can find some Lobster mushrooms sometime, in the woods or in a market.

Hey, Black Sheep! Concern about mistaken identities is healthy in foraging for mushrooms or plants, for sure. The best thing to have in the field is somebody who really knows the mushrooms, lol. ; ) I think you are in Georgia, right? The Southeast US didn't have many good regional mushroom ID books for a long time. But in the past few years, some good ones have come out. They each have their good points and shortcomings. You will have to check them out to see what style of presentation and features you like the best, but here are some options: - For a compact field guide with keys, Mushrooms of the Southeast, 2018, by Elliot and Stephenson - the 2 regional guides by the Bisettes: A Field Guide to Mushrooms of the Carolinas, 2018, and Mushrooms of the Gulf Coast States, 2019. They don't have keys, are larger, and not so conveniently organized. - A big reference book that's too big for a field guide, but has lots of information and technical stuff that's good for studying: Mushrooms of the Georgia Piedmont and Southern Appalachians, 2017, by Woehrel and Light.
