We do the same... when it's under warranty, we tell the customer to go to the dealer. They appreciate the heads-up for the "possible" free repair.

Identifix is an awesome troubleshooting aid. At the very list your now an informed customer so they can't screw with you and sell you parts you don't need.

Thanks for your report and this video. I just picked up a 2017. It was built in late 2016 and had the catalytic converter replaced in early 2017, according to the history. I'm guessing it suffered the same issue as yours did and the dealer over-prescribed that particular solution (not unusual). It was in a couple more times in subsequent months for other software updates, which I'm guessing at some point that patch on your bulletin was applied. Car has been working great, and I hope it continues to do so. Take care.

Good morning Mike nothing like a new car tripping the light sigh~ nice to see the launch communicated with all the modules as far as I can see. Curious if freeze frame data was captured. And how the fuel trims appeared along with o2 readings and a few other pids. Great job and A+ for Identifix
@TheDisgruntledMechanic

I should have done that but when I saw it had a TSB on it I just figured there wasn't much use but I agree I should have done it just for the data. The code is still in because I didn't want to delete it so the dealer could see it. So I still can do the checks if I have time. It goes in tomorrow. Thanks.

There are going to be so many more instances in the future where the dealer will be the only choice to get some items fixed. Nice scan tool buddy I still haven't bought one yet but i'm driving a Chevy and Ford so what's the odds of me ever needing one :)
@TheDisgruntledMechanic

You should never need a scan tool with those two brands! Yes I agree there will be a day that even seasoned tech will have a hard time diagnosing and fixing cars.

That's a bummer Mike. Have you ever had a check engine light on the 2011? The dealer will prolly tell ya all the brakes and tyres are worn out 😉

I only had 1 MIL on the 2011. It was just for the passenger side air bag. It was just a plug that would come lose under the seat.

I will let them do their thing and see what they say 1st. The dealership I go to is pretty good. If they look at it and do not tell me about the TSB I will surely tell them what I know at that point! And I will be sure to follow up after I take it to the dealership.

Be careful your Volt doesn't catch fire mine did at just 27000 miles. When it catches fire it goes up fast and hard. GM did not care about my random electrical problems when I complained. Myself and the others who's cars have caught fire all complained to GM's help line and all they did was pass the buck. I have 3 Chevy Volts Gen 1's and I have never had a single problem out of any of them. But this second gen is a dead dog. I would not recommend anyone buy one of these cars they have some severe problems. The advice I give GM is listen to your customers we aren't all brain dead idiots. I myself am a former ASE certified master tech. I bought a 2000 honda insight just to take the car apart so I could learn how the hybrid works in full. The Volt is much the same car with some variations. www.chevyvoltsucks.com is where you can find more information about the flaws with this car. I like the video Mike.

Funny you mention that. From day 1 this 2017 had a smell of something burning or melting when it went from electric to gas! almost 20000 mile and no fire yet! thanks so much for the heads up and I will check out that website!

@@TheDisgruntledMechanic I had two different Chevy Volt's I bought used certified pre-owned with low miles. I had a 2016 Premier with 20,000 miles and it had gas engine issues; when it switched to engine mode it would sometimes lung forward and the Engine, ABS, and traction control light came on. The second 2017 Volt Premier had 38K miles and it had electric issues. It would fully charge and then would give an error that it is unable to charge. The engine light came on and the electric powertrain was useless. My car would say it had 23EV miles remaining and then drop to 0miles randomly and switch to gas mode. The Volt is an unreliable piece of trash, and I will not be buying another Chevy ever!

my 2017 has a slight lunge when it goes to gas. every brand has its problems. Prius fans were upset I said bad things about the Prius but mine was just a troublesome piece of crap! I still have had no real issues with 87000 on the 2011 and 30000 on the 2017. I am sorry you got 2 lemons and I do not blame you for not wanting to buy another Chevy. Same as I said about Toyota. And Toyota would NOT stand behind the problems of the Prius.

@@TheDisgruntledMechanic It was Carmax luckily. So, they have the best 7 day return policy. Also, 30 day warranty. I ended up not even getting a hybrid/ electric vehicle. I bought a 2017 Honda CR-V touring. It gets surprisingly good gas mileage 28City 34 Hwy and it's a Honda. So, it's reliable!
