A warning: last time I played I was very lucky (during the ~pandemic) & got a ton of free levelling content to add to the few expansions I had. Seek those bargains if they still exist *or you will pay a LOT for Lotro.* "Stingy" is correct. If you want a good cheaper MMO, go Guild Wars 2 &/or Star Wars the Old Republic. A one-month one-time SWTOR sub opens a lot of great gaming. KoTOR3 w chat and an AH basically. *As for GW2, it's the best free game.* Then 20 gets you 2 huge xpacs & after that it's about 25 a year. Or you can go hog in the cash shop 8) If you get good at the economy the cash shop is pretty much free though. Absolutely play through the Shire & beyond in the free Lotro though. It truly is a special game.

Former LOTRO and DDO Gamemaster here. I loved the community of the game. Lot of memorable encounters and tons of passion from the players. I enjoyed "fixing" the in-game problems the most: un-stucking characters, dealing with unfair players in battlegrounds... :p, triggering boss loots, renaming weapons and character names and more. Sometimes it made me forget I'm actually working for a company.

Many years ago I was questing in Caras Galadhon, and there's a quest where you have to light some lanterns along a pathway. I for the life of me couldn't figure out how to light them, and figured the quest was bugged. I submitted a ticket and within a 5-10 mins a gamemaster contacted me and appeared seemingly out of thin air. I can't remember what either of us said, but he/she was friendly enough, and proceeded to light all lanterns for me, and sent me along my merry way. Fast forward like 8 or so years, and I come to realize the quest is only able to be finished during nightfall, hence why I couldn't light the lanterns, haha. Yet they were still nice enough to light them instead of just saying your missing something or did something wrong, figure it out.

There aren't that many other MMOs with that feature. The only other 2 MMOs I know of with that is like are GW1 I think, been a long time so not sure on that one. But the other, City of Heroes, 100% has that ability, where you can pick both the Difficulty of enemies compared to yourself. Up to 3 levels higher (Anything higher and you out right can't even touch it or do damage) But also able to set how many enemies spawn. When Solo, a 'Group' of enemies might be 2-3 enemies. The max amount of people in a group is 8 and can be like 10 enemies in a group. So you can set your personal difficulty, (And will be the group difficulty if your the leader), to be as easy, or hard, as needed for your class and playstyle.

I stumbled across LOTRO during open beta, having never played an MMO before, and was instantly hooked. I played hard core for a couple years and then casually on an off for the last 17 years. I was so active with the social world I made several friendships that lasted years with people that lived thousands of miles away and made arrangments to meet them in person. The game attracts my kind of people. I hope they can keep it going for many many more years to come. It feels like coming home whenever I start it back up. I agree with taking it slow. I got the max level back when it was 50 then 60 but since then I have taken my time. I'm still not at max level with my main character and I am ok with that. I play the most during the seasonal festivals, I find doing their festival questing so cozy and relaxing. I love waking through bree and coming across 30 people doing a music festival or stumbling across a theater rehearsal at the festival ground. This year I have been slowly going through the Rohan content and I'm still loving it. I hope they can keep it going for many many more years to come. After loving LOTRO I tried many many other MMO's but none have brought me back time and time again like LOTRO.

I took another trip to LOTRO two months ago and got stuck. I played it for a few years in Relaese and then tried a few other MMOs. What can I say, LOTRO is one of the best MMO's out there, the graphics even though they are getting on in years are still some of the best I have seen in an MMO. Every single detail, the design of the different areas, the atmosphere that this old MMO brings with it, I have never experienced this in any MMO. There is one more MMO, The Secret World by Funcom, which also has a unique atmosphere, but that's another story. What I like best is that LOTRO slows you down, you sit down and play it, but not in order to reach the end content as quickly as possible. LOTRO is played for the story, exploring every corner, RP is still omnipresent etc. and the community is one of the nicest there is. LOTRO will outlast some newer MMOs and this old MMO deserves it.🙂

I have started playing LOTRO in 2012. I can to it from DDO which have played since 2005. Both games are great testaments of being true to their source material. DDO is so old that it has a worse UI problem and frustrating group mechanics. When I played LOTRO I was floored by how incredible Middle Earth is represented. There is an immersion that is constant in the game. Other than EVE Online, I have never played another game that I could just travel around the world for hours and not get frustrated or bored. The UI for LOTRO will do much to improve the user experience. Standing Stones game does a great job with both these titles and has proven small dedicated market MMOs can last! I would say the player character is more important in the game than just a common soldier. In fact, they had to come up with a good reason for the character to NOT do with the fellowship. Size and needing us to remain behind to cover their tracks and deal with Angmar. From this point, I see the player as the unsung hero/nameless face of the one(s) who behind the scenes dealt with all the roadblocks and threats seeking to stop the Company from their goals. Galadriel even comments on our peculiar fate within the world. We are to the entire Fellowship and then all of Middle Earth as Sam Wise was to Frodo.

Now if they could just overhaul the absolutely horrible UI that people have been complaining about for yeeears... You cannot play the game at higher resolutions, as the UI scaling doesn't do its job properly and too many UI elements don't scale and end up tiny. I also think the level cap needs to shrink. Not necessarily make it take less time to reach max level, but just the number. 150 feels overbloated and levels don't feel impactful.

I have played this on and off over the years a truly great mmo in one of the best settings IMHO, but sadly my time is monopolised by a very busy job so I have to manage my free time and maximise what I play, if I get more time I would love to jump back into this magical game also as an aside I loved the crafting in this game one of the best I have ever used felt so rewarding! Keep the servers alive folks may this game continue into the far future.

THIS is the style of MMORPG that I came to love when I started playing them decades ago. Star Wars Galaxies was like this and it has been my favorite MMORPG of all time. PLAYERS are a big part of the content. Player interactions, player-created events, etc. Games these days no longer value social gameplay, they just put you on some lame hero story and it feels like a single player game. Upcoming games like Ashes of Creation and Dune: Awakening need to be taking notes here. People may think they just want to game solo, but most players end up loving games like LOTRO for decades, because they are more social.

This is the only mmo that ive played that doesnt rush you to max level. I would say that this is the perfect mmo for people like me that wants to enjoy a game like the witcher 3 but in an online fashion with people. Not rushing to max level, and enjoying the entire map the game has to offer is unique to lotro for sure. No other mmo manages to make you feel like you dont have to be max lvl to enjoy it.

The community around the music system indeed keeps the game alive - I just can't spend so many off time just to become a part of it truly. This led me to make a channel of my own for my rearrangements instead of concerting ingame all the time, and try to produce stuff that you mostly see from project-aimed minds like Grombine of Polnolunie or the work of Alenwen and Skaldiv of Darkbats go with. Machinima stile content is still alive if you look hard enough. :D It's pretty hard to find partners for more work and time consuming projects though. It also helps if the project itself leans more into a wholesome tone. :DDD So yeah...it takes some nudging to push things through, or you just follow Eric Chani's mentality and go with full solo production. xD

First, I love that you mentioned Arelith, so you have gained a forever subscriber just on that - sounds like I'm going to have to watch your series on that, too! Woah, my tired voice was so deep that I would've not as easily recognized it if it wasn't for the leadup. 😂 (40:51) Great video, dude; I found myself strapped in for an even longer watch 👀, wanting more. I want an extended cut xD, though I get that putting all this together takes a lot of work. You could make an audio-only podcast episode out of more of what the players said (though that means I'd have to hear my tired voice again, haha).

I still remember my friend telling me the game was coming out and there were closed beta codes in that months issue of PC Gamer. So I ran down to the book store and bought it. I played from closed beta to the release of Rohan. None of my friends played by that point so it was the end for me but I loved adventuring around in that game.

I genuinely can't even fathom being a "regular" player and not having a max level character. I think that's my issue with MMOs like this. I've played all of the games where end game is the focus and it's totally skewed my ability to enjoy games like this, unfortunately. Cool video though.

I think something that LOTRO fans leave out, is just how dead the servers are at this point. This may not be an issue for some people, but the game is so old and clunky at this point, that you kind of need people to experience it with or it kind feel king of depressing. Again, some people are fine with navigating the world solo, but if you're wanting to play with other people, this game's community is really small at this point. I know everyone talks about how nice the community is, and I can back that up, but servers these days hit peak of 1k players, on a weekend. Every year around this time, I always get in a huge LOTR mood, the lack of quality LOTR games always pulls me back to LOTRO, I played the heck out of this game back in the day, so the nostalgia is big with this one. However, almost immediately after I login, I wander around the world and realize how empty it is and I log off. I logged onto Arkenstone, which I was told is currently the most populated server and I found a single person. Maybe this is because people are on the premium servers due to their recent launch, but I've seen streamers playing on those and they don't seem super lively. Additionally, I don't like the idea of having to pay $15 to figure out if the community is active enough to make it worth playing, especially after how much I've spent on regions, expansions and other characters features in the past. Again, might be an issue for some folk, but this is definitely an issue for some and LOTRO fans don't tend to point this out. Again, sad that we're so short on LOTR games and this game is short on players, really wish this game would revive. But maybe I'm wrong, maybe there's a prime time I need to be online for.
