@@GarageTimeAutoResto Hi Tom, yes all went well, driver's door got right first time, passenger door bit more tricky so took the car and my socket set out on one of the worst roads I know around here in Huddersfield, (Yorkshire UK) and kept adjusting until I got it right. Again thank you very much for your help, and I love your Porsche. Cheers Jon.

Well as you know this is a very timely video for me. Great video. This is like voodoo magic. I used to have a 82 SC that would close hard and when you pulled the trigger to release the door it would pop out on its own. As if it was under a lot of tension. I'm friends with the new owner and would love to fix the door for him. I'm hoping what I have learned from this video and what I will learn installing my doors will help me, help him.

Great video Tom. I will follow your lead and restore the strikers on my project (64 356SC). Would you do plating at home? Do you have a local OC shop to recommend? Lee
@GarageTimeAutoResto
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Lee, I'm not opposed to plating at home with something like Caswell, but I have parts plated for my business once a month so I add car parts in from time to time at no extra cost. I do have my own yellow chromate solution which is really easy. The place I use is Cadillac plating in Orange. It's a dirty shop, fair warning. Contact me if you want to be in my next batch of parts. They have a lot charge of $60 that you can avoid.

Thanks, nice video - just did this on my '74 911. Original plastic pieces had crumbled like a cookie. Rebuild kits were a whole lot cheaper than all new striker plates. A little tedious, but success in the end and now the door shuts with that solid Porsche thump. Odd that the striker plate, shift coupling, and shifter bushings all failed/crumbled within a month of each other - has me wondering what's next??
@GarageTimeAutoResto

This was a harder project than I thought it would be, but so worth it. Check the plastic throttle rod bushings inside the tunnel. Have you changed this God awful plastic fuel lines that Porsche blessed us with in 1974?
@joew1803
3 жыл бұрын
@@GarageTimeAutoResto I did change the throttle bushings too, funny how this was all original plastic and it all decided to fail at the same time. I have not changed the fuel line but was considering it. However, I was discouraged from proactively changing it by a local and well respected 911 mechanic. He said in his 30+ years he had never seen one fail on its own (famous last words). It looks like a very complicated ordeal with e-brake and maybe transmission being in the way, especially crawling around under jack stands. You had the perfect opportunity to do yours. Keeping my fingers crossed for now.

@filou1200

@@GarageTimeAutoResto 🙂didn't need an impact hammer. Was able to adjust the door striker in a better position but not like your car. My door still closes too difficult (have to slam it too hard to close it) and is not aligned perfectly (still sits out 1-2mm). Have to replace the plastic parts as they crumbled and fell out when adjusting the striker.

Gorgeous car, but the doors on VW bugs from the same era sound the same (I had one in high school in the late 80s). In the hopes of eventually owning a 911, I used to imagine that my Bug was a 911-lite. 😄

Interesting in that my XJ6 doors make a similar nice sound. In my case though I have something that rattles, probably the window glass. When I have the door cards off to redo the interior I'll explore that rattle. Side note, my backordered paint will finally arrive Monday! Anyway, great info on rebuilding, your car is looking great.
