Once upon a time in a night market in Luang Prabang.
Luang Prabang is a beautiful picturesque town, the former capital of Laos and in more recent times it been declared a UNESCO world heritage city. It oozes charm, with a mixture of French and Laotian architecture it has become one of my favorite cities.
There is no better way to discover the historic streets of this city than under dusk while discovering new cuisine and appreciating the impressive artwork of the locals. The mixed French and Laotian influence is evident throughout the street while you duck underneath the many overhanging stalls.
Luang Prabang night market is a must-experience. It’s an amazing sight and offers the most extensive collection of handicrafts in the country. With around 250 handicraft vendors who sell their hand-made products nightly, the market showcases an extensive variety of handicrafts made by local ethnic groups. On display are many types of textiles, exquisite ceramics, antiques, paintings, coffee and tea, quilts, shoes, silver, bags, ornaments and cutlery made from recycled bombs. There are a lot of interesting items on display at the night market that are hard to find elsewhere.
It is located along Sisavangvong Road from the Tourism office and heads towards the Royal Palace Museum. Every evening a few hundred meter stretch of road is closed to vehicle traffic and turned into a walking and shopping street while the market takes place.
With stalls and shop selling everything you could ever want it is easy to spend hours exploring the winding lanes which run throughout the city.
For me, its time to catch up flight to another destination...
