This morning the kids and I were lucky enough to witness, Lulu, our 2 year-old Gordon Setter, play with a coyote in our backyard. They played for over 20 minutes. Incredible!
This reminds of lulu, a 5 year old rich kid, never exposed to danger against a kid who grew up in the projects.

I witnessed a coyote in person last night. He was just looking over the lake and the hill in the most still position ive ever seen an animal...all he moved were his ears and he would slightly turn his head once in awhile...i sat next to him for about an hour then i looked back over and it was transformed in to a wooden carving of a coyote....comes alive at night time, i beleive the person that carved it is still with it and he comes back at night. i can also hear everythin around me and see bett

Your dog, Lulu, is so cute! Make sure to keep her inside because coyotes start to "play" with them, until they're on the coyotes home turf, where usually, a pack is waiting to jump on unsuspecting victims. The other morning I went out to find a coyote trying to lure our dogs out. It wasn't afraid of me at all. I went inside and grabbed our .410 and went back out. By then it was out of range, but it's still an eye awakening experience.

@whitney311 I think you are spot on. I have cousins in Alberta who farm. Coyotes are forever coming up to the house when the dogs are chained there, wanting to play. The first time it happened the second night the pack came back and killed the dog. Dogs sleep indoors now!

Coyotes do occasionally eat dogs, but usually they prefer smaller dogs. With large dogs, coyotes tend to "play nice" (which can cause its own problems if you've got an un-spayed female)

They eventually will do that if this kind of thing continues. There have been story after story of situations like this where a Coyote will show up and try to lure a dog out. Or, if the dog is chained up, the Coyotes will simply bide their time. Once the Coyotes are hungry/desperate enough they'll make a move. I suspect that Lulu isn't around anymore if this kind of behavior continued...it would only be a matter of time.

If two yotes show up next time, your kids will be LUCKY enough to watch their pet die. They are wild animals and I have seen them kill dogs bigger than the one shown here. It blows my mind that people could be so ignorant to think this is just cute play. These animals are highly adaptable and know what they are doing. They do nothing for play, they have to survive.

You're probably right about your pit bulls. I just don't understand why there's so many owners of dogs who think it's okay for their dogs to mingle or chase away coyotes when all it takes is for the Coyotes to win just ONE time. Then you've got a dead pet on your hands. They forget how smart the Coyotes actually are. There's always a method to what they do...and that's either eating or mating.
@KhalsaRaj13

Looking for back up. They have learned to draw domestic dogs into the tree lines. Lulu would have been attacked and eaten. Here in New England we see it all the time. Usually its a male dog, lured by a female coyote. There are 15-20 posters for missing pets hanging in the feed store

By the looks of things you have a dog fence in your yard, which probably saved your dogs life. I agree with whitney311, that one coyote could have very easily killed your dog if it wanted to. To most, they look cute but in reality they are lowly land sharks that will eat anything. I recommend keeping a close eye on your dog and don't allow this interaction to happen if you can.
@FullMetalllll

@explosiveInc This is wrong. Mainly, they hunt in pairs. Sometimes, it's a lot more. I've been watching a lot of these videos and every time the Coyote "plays" with a dog, they are always trying to lure them into the dark or into the forest.

Very interesting vid. We have lots of coyotes on our property and they DO hunt in packs. I have to agree: the coyote doesn't appear to be truly playing. Body language is too stiff and skittish. Coyote bitches will lure males out to a waiting pack, it's true. They don't call em Wile E. for nothin'. Lulu, being young and trusting, had no way of knowing that some animals have to fight for their food.

@Blackhawkflygirl Some of them are actually right, we have the same problem with dingoes in Australia, not so much with the 'luring' dingoes simply don't hunt that way, but there is a definite problem with them becoming too familiar with non-threatening humans and seeing kids and pets as food. I'm not saying shoot the thing, but grabbing a broom and convincing it to leave and not want to come back is a damn good idea.
@Trustthapo

@1GSBD wat. Lowly land sharks? VERY beautiful use of opinion! Also, having your yard fenced in could have been a disaster. Had the coyote been pissed or hungry, it could have attacked the dog with no escape. Neither the dog or the coyote were interested in harming the other, though, so that's alright. I would be more scared of my dog getting parvo or distemper from being outside.
@OhSoNormal

Play bows and lying down they are signals to play and non-threatening behavior. Canids might decoy but they don't pretend to play with you and then kill you! My Belgian Terv and I hiked a lot I saw her play with a coyote, run with and protected deer(my friends dogs tried to attack and kill it) and yet she drove a bear when he came too close to me so :-P on those who say a coyote or dog for that matter can't differentiate between non-threatening and threatening.

Well a dog Lulu's size has no worries...the coyote is just a playmate and visa versa. Smaller dogs, and cats, might have a serious issue on their hands though. And no one can tell me these coyotes aren't (a significant) part wolf. They have a lot of features of wolves and are much larger than the coyotes found out west. A lot of interbreeding between the two species had to occur on the coyotes' journey to colonize the eastern US.

When it lured your dog behind the trees, it was a tactic & would have attacked your dog out of your line of vision. The first time that your dog sat down around 42 seconds, the coyote was in full attack mode. That was a killer saunter the coyote was demonstrating. If your dog hadn't gotten up, it would have gone for your dog's throat. Thankfully, it didn't get her this time. But that same coyote or other members of the pack would be back. You shouldn't leave your dog alone in the back here.
