I'm delighted by its availability. Now getting the original S1 and S5 for 900 USD and lower. And THAT is the truly sweet sweet deal... Compared to the S5II X, my S1 ('upgraded' from GH5 to S1 a couple of years back) offers a CFExpress Type B internally, and the same external RAW options. Probably going to get a used S5 (or even a GH6), and wait for a couple of years before taking the plunge for the S5 II X. It's the best Lumix camera out there, but I'll wait till they bring in either internal RAW or 4K 120 FPS without crop (also a CFExpress Type B slot for recording most of the modes internally)

Totally agree with this stance, I absolutely love the shooting experience on my GH6 logistically and I use slow motion/switch frame rates constantly. The apsc crop would be a huge hinderance. I also think some of the featured recording modes in all these cameras like prores are FOR MOST PEOPLE just a gimmick. At least, I'm definitely not shooting a 14 hour day in prores 😅 but it is useful to have "just in case"

As far as the SSD goes, the way I see it, is if I am putting a cage on it, to protect it already, a cable clap and mount are a no brainer, compared to very expensive C-Fast media. For people who can write off such media for business purposes, those types of media are a no brainer. The SSD is for people like me, who don't do this for a living and can get a USB SSD 4tb for $250 vs $1799 Anglebird C-Fast type B of the same size (almost the same cost as the camera itself lol). Having said this, I do wish the camera came with a C-Fast slot for when prices come down, but I can live without it.

I love the massive capabilities of my GH-6 and I am a mostly MFT cine style prime lens shooter so autofocus is accomplished by DJI Lidar attachments in the rare cases I am not fully manual. I have a pretty extensive kit of MFT adapted glass of the vintage variety coupled with MFT anamorphic glass so I am not wanting to go back into heavier full frame lenses. So for me the next ideal camera would be a GH-6X with the new autofocus and I'll be ready for the next five to seven years as a happy camper. I went from gh-4 to GH-6 because that workhorse GH-4 just kept getting the jobs done so I never upgraded to a GH-5.

If I ever was to move camp from MFT to Full-Frame then the "X" would be the only camera for me. My mate's S5ii is phenomenal and as pin-sharp as you can get, however I still prefer my GH6 simply because, of what you say, 4K 120fps 10 bit internal. If there was ever a "mic drop" moment that would be it. I don't know if you have tried DaVinci Resolve yet, however its Noise Reduction is simply amazeballs for lowlight/indoor with GH6 footage. Its even better when S5ii footage put thorough the Noise Reduction washer. Last month I made a fatal error filming the Flying Scotsman at East Lancashire Railway, and recording direct to my Atomos Ninja, rather than the internal CF Express card. With the GH6 you can use a "Monitoring LUT". The GH6 knows the difference and adjusts the Waveform to compensate for what you are looking at. The Atomos, does not compensate for a "Monitoring LUT". I had not worked this out and the entire day's footage was under exposed. No amount of digital witchcraft was going to save me. Having an external monitor can bring benefits of recording to external cards, but to the unwary it can present you with problems.

Ja the lense cost.. but i noticed the lenses that make m43 really good are very expensive too. The olympus pro lenses are not cheap and the leica 10-25 , 25-50 1.7 are 2000 each. Even the leica 100-400 is more expensive than some full frame lenses within this range. There are many cheap m43 lenses but in my opinion they are not worth buing if you want the best quality.

@@castielvargastv7931 On point, & on top of it, by comparison, the FF equivalents (or close enough), such as the Sigma 24*70 & 28*70 F/2.8 (Art & Comtemporary) lenses will gather + light proportionnally, compatible with the S5 line (L mOUnt aLLiiiiiiaaaanCe !), with better optical quality, at lower cost, while not necessarily being heavier (the Contemporary being only 470g for instance). I think the FF parc lacks some cheap options such as pancake lenses equivalents for expl, but some of the existing products are quite great in perf & affordable, while, as said, the quali options in the 4/3 ecosystem actually get costly real fast (not + than FF, but disproportionate compared to the usual $$ gap between these ecosystems). What striked me on that was the comparison Gerald Undone made between & of these Leica F/1.7 zooms, & a SpeedBoosted APSC Sigma, which provided better perfs in some aspects. That gave me the hint the best deals in 4/3's perspective, could be SpeedBoosting some awesome lenses of other sensor scales, that could be cheaper & better than 4/3 glass. But it requires even + research, on actual compatibility/reliability, AF perf, vignetting, used market opportunities (some much easier & cheaper found than others...), etc.

I'm still using the S5 (original one), and I still love it, but have been thinking really hard about the GH6, and now "the x", simply because I want to be able to record direct to an SSD drive. That's really appealing to me and would really help my workflow. So much cheaper than the billions of SD cards that we all own. ;) I have full frame lenses, so it probably makes more sense for me to stay in that world, but that GH6 has always been calling me. Sorry, I’m not sure either camera meets what mft is really about; small and light. One advantage to the GH6 is small lenses, but the camera is really big and honestly if I was going to start a channel using a FF I would suggest the Sony A7IV (or maybe the upcoming A7C2). At least it’s smaller and lighter than either of these two (closer to the grass roots of mft in that sense) and you have access to an amazing selection of lenses. Of course; you are back to largely big lenses, but that seems to be what you want. Nothing wrong with that and probably needed for professional work. It is like saying you like have a small car channel, have a few, but instead share drives using a Ford f150. Always enjoy your videos, they offer some interesting content and are often fun, but this iseems more about not staying with your theme. Nothing wrong with that, this one was so,well done but now just like so many other folks who left the mft circle. Just not what I hoped to see; one about cameras that are mft, small, light and fun to use! In fairness, that’s just what drew me to the channel. Maybe not others.

Thanks for your comment! I appreciate you taking the time. I’m definitely not leaving mft and definitely not moving on from small cameras 😊 if they ever bring out a mft camera with pdaf (come onnnn lumix!!) that would be my choice to film myself. I think there are two reasons why I adore mft. Like you say, it’s the small and capable side 90% of the time. The other 10% is just how astounding these cameras are for high end video work. I love that they can do both - it’s so cool! I appreciate that that side of mft isn’t for everyone, but it’s definitely worth talking about as it’s a huge benefit of the system over all 😊 (Tho I totally agree the gh6 is chonky! Hopefully if and when there’s an update it can be smaller 🙏)

Thanks very much for this video. I say this as a guy from Yorkshire, but living in Vietnam, facing the very first-world quandary / dilemma / maze of whether to get a s5iiX or a GH6. Already have MFT glass and an old but very loved GH4; but obvs lured by FF, and the fact that you can adapt EF lenses (which are fantastically cheap in Vietnam) to the X and get autofocus etc. This seems like an unbeatable proposition for documentary work; however I've been wedded to and a strong advocate for MFT for many years, so it feels a bit like a betrayal. I want to shoot films in the jungle, so low light might be an issue, but then dual-gain sensor and all that, It's tough to decide, and I simply can't read or watch any more reviews. Your vid has swung me ever so slightly towards GH6, having spent the last two days in what I thought was a final decision to get the X. Yes, an external SSD is fantastically great but also, yes, a faff. CF cards are expensive though - even here - and I can't just stick 'em in my Mac; FF lenses are heavy. Etc. Any way, loved the vid and your general attitude towards and opinions about it all.

Thanks for the review and thoughts on the "X"! I've been waiting for the reviews to start rolling in, since I've had my pre-order in for a few months. I'm super excited to get it, but you do bring up several good points on the rigging. I've recently been getting into the M43 system and have several lenses now. Maybe I'll have to invest in a GH6 body down the road to have the best of both worlds, especially if the prices come down even more. I am very curious to see what Panasonic will be releasing in the M43 lineup over the next year or so.

I’m unfortunately cash limited, but I’m not using it for an income, so a used OG S5 with a Sigma 45mm f2.8 for $1000 was pretty much as far as I could stretch. Upside is I got it from a local person who used it strictly in a static studio environment to an external recorder, so it was pristine with a close to zero shutter count (as it never left its cage mount and was never used for stills or in-camera recording). Looking forward to doing astrophotography with it as soon as I can save up for a good open wide angle lens.

I watch you cause you have a useful way of explaining the on-the-job nitty gritty. (better than the others 😊) Like you, I am a pragmatic videographer so I just whack the Lumix on the tripod and I’m ready for action I strap a monitor on the tripod leg (and it’s still minimal), It’s satisfying way for framing and M. focus I don’t need Full frame just for the shallower DOF, I get better result with longer lenses on Gh5 / 6 Olympus 25/1.2 + 42 /1.2 + Oly 75mm is much more (3D) than relying on Full frame ! I also don't need the low light benefit of Full frame because Sydney has plenty sun All full frame cameras struggle Electrnically > transfer rates / frame rate / heat That's why the S5 2 and the X are different / thanks to the internal Fan I do add a small side/back lights onto subject to separate more. Think you nailed it on the head. The benefits that you get from the smaller sensor on M4/3 will mean it will always be a step up when compared to FF cameras in the same price range. So personally i think a perfect set up using sub $4000 cameras would be S5iix as a main A-cam for most recording due to the dynamic range and noise performance. A GH6ii or which ever m4/3 camera they bring out with PDAF as b cam, gimbal cam, etc for those slower frame rates. Then either a s5, S5ii or perhaps a S1R (S1Rii someday) for high res photography when needed and as a 3rd camera for multicam set ups like a wedding ceremony That covers most needed uses cases and each camera fills a different need but all within the same brand

5:32 - BUT, and there is a big BUT. SSD's cost way less than SD cards and can be much larger. So we could argue that we could buy an SSD per project or at least have enough spares to keep a good number of projects "in-flight" before we format and reuse the SSD for a new project. HI I still remember that video, when the gh6 came out in which you made a comparison with the s5 mark 1, and it almost seemed that the management of low light noise, in some situations, was better on the gh6. Now I have a s5 ii and I must say that compared to the gh6 that I had noticed an improvement in noise management which could actually be 2 clear stops. It seems to me that sometimes even movies at 25,600 ISO can be used if you don't have too many pretensions. I don't know if the s5 mark 1 had worse performance in handling noise. As for the photos, I think the gh6 offers better images overall. Trying the lumix s 20-60 and the 50 f1.8 the detail didn't make me crazy. And when will you borrow the leica sl 100-400 to use with s5ii for a nice review? :) What do you think about the photos? by the way when will they announce a new micro 4/3 :P

well everything you said in the conclusion is basically why the GH6 is till my favorite camera I own and ever had (I own other systems and have used bigger high end sensor cameras) I used the S5II and what killed me is the APSC crop, its a fantastic camera but not professional enough compared to my GH6, the FF is irrelevant to me in 99% of the situations, so the GH6 being a underrated "crop sensor" is not a problem for me, so I didn't buy the S5II or X, the crop is a huge problem for me specially when you have the Canon R8 which is $1500 and doesn't have a crop in 4k 10bit 60fps, I know it lacks many features from lumix cameras but still, it has great autofocus, colors and no crop in FF, the lack of CFExpress cards for higher bitrates and codecs is a huge problem for me, so its not worth in my opinion (in my scenario) so between the X and GH6, I'd go GH6 without a doubt.

If it can't be done without accessories, I don't want it. The X seems like an excellent fully-rigged camera for professionals, but my S5, 20-60 and a couple of manual f1.4 lenses fit in a small shoulder bag.

To be honest, I don't use the SSD myself. I would much rather attach a USB power-pack to the camera, via the USB port, and not have to worry about batteries dying on me if I am out all day. I've got two SSD's for my Ninja, so I don't even have to worry about how much stuff I capture on the day either. I have 1Tb and 0.5Tb cards for the Ninja. I shudder to think how much it would cost in SD cards to make up 1.5Tb of storage.

Canon R8 does not have apsc crop 4k60. So Panasonic should unlock that option even with overheating, because I believe that 10 or 15 minutes 4k60 ff would be enough for many people for b-roll.
@samohara5187
Жыл бұрын
R8 trades to the no-crop for no IBIS, and lenses that you have have to remortgage your house to afford. But that option for the S5 II/X would be a cool one, and maybe one that they'll unlock with firmware down the line (preferably before an S1H2 comes along).

I had the same feelings about the S5 4k60 crop, so whenever it's going to be an issue I shoot in the 4k anamorphic mode all day but without an anamorphic lens.
@frostgodx

How does that work out in the end
@maxresdefault8330
Жыл бұрын
You just get a 4:3 APSC crop. It records a boxy 4:3 image, it plays back in 4:3, the stabilisation works as normal unless you switch anamorphic stabilisation on. On the old S5 it's about as close as you can get to open gate. I think a lot of people overlooked it because it's called anamorphic 4:3. It's just 4:3.

I just wish the s5iix had twin cfexpress cards so all the available formats could be recorded internally. So much easier than having to rig with external ssd or ninja V. Please excuse my basic question, as I am not an experienced videographer. Couldn’t you just use the 1.4x teleconverter for all your slower frame rates then when you switched to your higher frame rates (1.5x crop) the difference in the field of view would be minimal? Of course this would mean keeping a wider lens on the camera for the whole shoot as if it were apsc camera. Eg. a 35mm prime would be like a 49mm(1.4x)/52.5mm(1.5x).
@MicroFourNerds
Жыл бұрын
Yes that’s an option - I could just make the camera 100% apsc mode then it would change. I just think it’s a waste losing the full potential of the sensor, even if I can only use it for some shots 😊
