@NotSoCrazyNinja

My gut instinct has never steered me wrong and has saved my backside countless times. It's real alright, and if you get a "bad feeling" about something, take note. If you're about to board a flight and get a "bad feeling", don't board. If it turns out that nothing apparently happens during the flight, that doesn't always mean it would have been uneventful had you boarded. Life is weird in that very small changes can dramatically change the course of events for a person. By not boarding the flight in this scenario, you may have avoided getting sick with something that could have killed you. You may end up meeting someone on the next flight that you would have never taken. Your delay may have prevented you from being in an auto accident after landing. Due to the track record of my "gut instinct" on things that are obvious, I no longer question the not-so-obvious reasons. I just take it that I avoided something dangerous and am thankful to have been alerted.

I played piano and toured with Seals & Crofts in 1977 and also traveled in a Convair CV-240 that I have many wonderful memories of when flying from place to place playing concerts in the Mid-West and South East. We were touring at the same time as the Lynyrd Skynyrd band in 1977 and remember the news of the crash and how terrible we all felt of the news. It was chilling as we also flew in the same make and model airplane, and how grateful we were to have not only a great pilot, but worked on Convairs, knew every inch of the plane, and paid particular attention and maintained the 2 18 cylinder radial engines.
@aschule5684

Greetings sir, Seals & Crofts 👍 that is chilling to think about flying the exact same model of plane. But, you luckily had a great pilot. Not true of the Skynyrd camp. IDK how anyone could be a pilot about to make a 600 mile flight in a plane without a working fuel gauge and NOT check the fuel that's just nuts to think about to me. Thanks for sharing your story and your music ☮️

This really true, I met Steve Gains in Galena, Ks. When I was just a young boy working nights at "Browns Cafe" on Hwy 66 between Galena, KS and Joplin, MO; When he and John "Moose" Moss we're in a band called Crawdad, Cassie was already in Skynard I "Think," They used to play at the "Ranch" Across the St and down the block a ways, Mom worked there too (Browns Cafe) Thats how I got the job...It wasn't only him, Dr. Hook used to come in too and so did Kansas, God only knows how many others I didn't know...Anyways, Mom told me, "see that guy siting at the end of the bar?" "Yes"..."Well, you've been wanting to learn the guitar, Right?" "Well go talk to him, his name is Steve" I was really shy and withdrawn when I was a kid so with much "Pushing me" Mom talked me into going out and talking to him, I said "Hello Steve" he said "HI" and we started talking about the guitar, he said "do you have a guitar?" I said "Yeah but it's not a good one, I got it for Christmas from Western Auto "He said "Thats ok, Can you bring it next week?" I said "Yeah, but I'll have to leave it in moms car." "Ok, Bring it next week", So all that week I tried to improve my speed and technique" Still didn't know shit but ole McDonald and shit like that, from reading music" So the next week I was nervous..I didn't think he was going to show up and then...he walks thru the door and I headed outside to get that "El Cheapo' Acoustic guitar and my music books, I come back in and he says "Is that it?" I said "yeah Steve its all mom could afford." He asks So "Let me see where you are" So I pulled out my Guitar and start TRYING to play "Mary had a little Lamb", reading from the book, He yanks that book out of my hands and says "Thats your first mistake..Learning guitar from that ole book" I ask Well "How am I supposed to get better w/o that book?" "He showed me all the strings and how to tune it just right, Then asks "Do you know all your basic chords?" I say "Well most of them, what I want to learn is lead" he just says "There are no sharps or flats between B and C or E and F" and that opened it all up for me. Then I remember Dr, Hook comin' in and every once in awhile the booth juke boxes would get stuck so you could listen to anything you wanted all night free and they came in and it happened..they had just cut "The Cover of the Rolling Stone, Demo" and only local radio stations were playing it at that time, it has an intentional horrible guitar solo in it and every time that would play they would all just laugh really loud, Ada (RIP, Ada)the waitress thought they were slipping drugs in ppls coffee and made a bid deal about it and mom as cool as she was said "They're young and wild, they aren't bothering anyone, Ada just mind your own business...What a growing experience!!! All true story...My first and only Guitar lesson, from Steve Gains! TRUE STORY!

@Li Mlcci He was NO an egomaniac that's for sure, He was always really quiet and stayed mostly to himself, Very shy too, A great and really nice guy, I only met him that one time. Then he was off to Kansas City I think, The rest is history., There is an interview with Gary Rossington about Cassie teeling all the band about him, And nobody wanted anything to do with a scraggly bearded "OKIE". He was from Miami Oklahoma at that time. I've been there MANY times, Not far from where I lived, Skynyrd were playing Memorial hall in Joplin Mo, on HWY 66 and Steve was playing at the "Ranch" on the same Hwy, Just a hop and a skip away. Hello to Ace Moreland, Johnny Rose, John "Moose" Moss and Bugs Henderson too! But there was one guy I hated to see come in..."Johnny Paycheck", He always spilled coffee and water under his booth and I'd have to go out and mop it up. He always called me "Boy" lol! I WAS JUST A BOY THEN!

The plane was 30 years old in 1977 which is hardly outdated for an airplane to be in service. The NTSB ruled it was pilot error there was nothing wrong with the plane other than the fact that one of the engines may have been running a little rich on fuel. What Aerosmith said means absolutely nothing and everyone gets a gut instinct before they get on a plane I just never hear about it because almost 100% of planes end up landing safely. There is nothing that unusual about exhaust flames from a radial engine. Without seeing it for ourselves it’s impossible to say if what they saw was out of the ordinary or not. Based on the NTSB investigation, it seems likely that the plane simply didn’t have as much fuel in the tank as they thought when they took off.
@whalesong999
5 жыл бұрын
@@jacksons1010 It depends on the color of the flames. Radials produce a blue flame from the exhaust when running normally, an orange flame if running too rich. It's more likely that what they were seeing was some other flame coming from the cowling joints which is not normal and indicative of a serious problem with the engine. It's also possible that the engine was having a breakdown issue which would send spurting orange flames from the exhaust which is at trailing edge of the engine nacelle. Also, during daytime use, no flame should be visible, especially on the Convair with it's exhaust runs cooling the gases before they exit.

What a shame.A great loss. My cousin drove for them much later and he died about 6 years after his father " my Uncle Charlie Louvin" died in 2011. I was on my first small club circuit tour when Skynyrd's plane crashed. Friend of mine who worked at a local newspaper rushed the teletype news strip to me when it happen. Our big truck crashed between Cocoa Beach and Jacksonville not long after.Driver fell asleep and left interstate.Our rented truck was roughed up a bit,but luckily none of us were injured,but I lost my beautiful 69 Blue floral Fender telecaster to pay the wrecker bill.😥 It was hard to do my bands next performance grieving.A very sad event at a time when I was just a teenager starting out on a larger scale than my preteen years performing. To me,Skynyrd's plane crash is one of the worst tragedies of that time. The 70's was a great time.The best to me,but sometimes if I think beyond the great times hard enough,I remember some of the not so great times as well. Sometimes I think we choose to try and block or forget the bad stuff and remember only the happy things. I still have that old teletype sheet packed away somewhere. 1 second ago

There are a couple of things you never go cheap on as a band. One of the most important is the airplane and the pilots. One single mistake or oversight is all it takes. I was at that 'last' concert in Greenville, a junior at Clemson, with a biochem exam the next day, but it was one of those sureal events where i had a preminition I needed to be there....glad I went, and although I didnt do well on that exam, this concert had far more impact to me...RIP Lynard Skynard

Their debut album I loaned that to my best friend with 20 other albums the day of the plane crashed my best friends whole house caught on fire and the only album that Survived was the free bird album to this day if I put it on a turntable it still plays...To me it's an amazing story because when I picked it out of the rubble it smelled like smoke for over a year and it was soaking wet cover still looks good the album has a slight warp to it but still plays great... I just wanted to tell my story after listening to the songs on KZitem..😲😲😲

I was on a Delta flight with this band in the late 1990's from Atlanta to Shreveport, LA. We were all in first class and I didn't realize who it was until well into the flight. I was wondering who these guys were. They were fairly ruckus but seemed to be decent people. Billy Powell and Johnny Van Zant sat in front of me. The eerie thing about it is that the pilot said to prepare for a lot of turbulence as we were flying into a storm. I'm thinking "great, on a plane with lynyrd Skynyrd flying into a storm" probably somewhere over Mississippi, the location of the crash. Fortunately, the turbulence was mild and we made it to Shreveport with little problem.

I seen Lynyrd Skynyrd live before the crash on April 23, 1977 in Louisville, Ky. It was a fabulous show. I sold a couple extra tickets I had for Led Zeppelin two nights later on April 25, 1977 at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Ky. One of the best shows I've ever seen, and my all time favorite rock band.

What's even more interesting is that RVZ had premonitions about the crash...he knew it was going down...and the odd things that happened to one band member as he struggled to seek help for them all....I've read all about the crash and cant seem to find this information anymore but if I fall upon it again I'll come back here and share the link...I'd love for all Skynyrd fans to read what all happened the night of the crash... it's truly something you will never forget...peace n love to u all

JoJo had the premonition. She dreamed the night before the crash that the plane crashed and woke up crying to her mother. Her mother assured her everything was fine and it was just a dream. The dream came true the next night.

R.I.P. My first airplane ride was on the same type of plane, a Convair 240, in 1971. Built in the late-1940s, it had been converted into a private plane with sofas, chairs, tables, etc.

This brought back so many memories, I attended SMJC back then and worked part time at the McComb airport on the fuel line, I was off that night but when my buddy that was working was told Lynyrd Skynyrd was coming in (because of not enough fuel to make Baton Rouge) he called and told me, knowing I was a huge fan, I jumped in the car for the 15 mile drive, I was so pumped about (hopefully) being able to meet them............by the time I got there they were down, we got little bits and pieces of what happen over the next few hrs, some real some bs, and days/weeks/yrs after, more of the same.........some things I'm glad I found out the truth about, others I wish I hadn't. But their music still fills me with a feeling no other band ever will. Thanks for posting this Jerry, and doing it respectfully.

Im a year late reading these comments, but I know quite a bit of history on this band. Lynyrd Skynyrd was a name parody of their high school gym coach, Mr. Leonard Skinner, who was on their ass about long hair. Mr. Skinner later retired and became a real estate agent, and a good friend who was at some of the concerts to introduce them on stage. He is buried not far from Ronnie and Leon. After seeing a marqee sign outside a gig with Linard Skinard in big letters, a little creative spelling by Producer Al Kooper brought it to be Lynyrd Skynyrd. And the rest they say, is history. I remember when the plane crash happened. We had just lost Elvis Presley just 2 months prior! We were all devastated by it. I remember when Allen Collins died in 1990. I was headed home from work, and just passed my brotherinlaw and sisters house. Tony was a huge fan of Ronnie's. They even shared the same birthday. He had a Skynyrd cover band. He looked and sang like Ronnie, and played drums. His nephew, Mike, who was near the same age as he, was lead guitar, and looked alot like Gary! He also named his daughter, Melody, after Melody Van Zant. The bass player looked like Steve, and my cousin Danny looked like Allen. Their band was called "Open Fire!" We lost my bil in 2012, to cancer. We gathered around at his burial and sang The Ballad of Curtis Loew. I miss Tony so much. He was such a good guy!

I appreciate your interest and I really love knowing more about the band. I have always been a fan of the songs that I have been listening to for years. But, I didn't know much about the musicians. They are definitely a great loss. They are legends and their music will be heard many generations to come. Thank You for your comment, I have been unable to access this account for a while. I'm glad to be able to let you know that I finally got to read it, and reply.

They played at 2 pep rallies at N.B. Forrest Sr. High in 73 in a Packed Auditorium. The Students went Crazy. I can remember when they use to practice in the wesconett mini storage 70/71,72,73 right by my house, about a football Field away. I also remember several times that they played at a small but very popular dance bar called The Still, located beside the railroad tracks on US 17 and San Juan Avenue on the Westside of Jax. They packed the house each time they played. That was when they hadn't decided on their permanent name yet, with the exception of playing at Forrest under the Very Well Known Name in Jacksonville area bars under the Skynyrd Name . A group that was well on their way to Fame back in 72 / 73 .
