Same! there is no reason we can't have actual M16s

I was able to borrow a commercial M16A2 during the 90s. It shot great and I did not end up wishing it had a 3 round burst. Being familiar with the Colt and Hydra M16A1s,. I thought that the heavier and semi auto M16A2 was more than adequate for protection in far flung areas.

I completely agree with you! Part of the reason I enjoy showcasing these videos is that in my decade and a half in the military I rarely fired anything in full auto. Ammo conservation and accuracy were more important. Having a semi-auto variant is a very capable rifle. Being able to shoot 3 round burst or full auto is fun, but not nearly as effective in an actual combat role.

Beautiful rifle, one of my all time favourites. Shame about the 3 round burst though. I’ve heard it was a feature that was quite unliked and most soldiers/marines prefer full auto.

Paul, I understand what you are saying, but the full auto vs 3 round burst argument never made much sense to me. In actual combat, I can count the number of times I fired my weapon on anything other than semi-auto. When you are carrying all of your ammo on your chest, and your survivability depends on conservation and adequate application, you suddenly don't feel like dumping magazines at people. The caveat to that is small units in retrograde will often dedicate one person to fire in full auto to create the feeling of a larger force. I fire more full auto stuff now for fun than I ever did in the military. In my opinion, It is nice to have the capability if you need it, but most soldiers will never need it and don't train enough to adequately employ a full auto weapons system.

@@LegacyArmsIntl yeah, I totally understand what you’re saying. Unless you’re suppressing an enemy position or as you say, trying to give the impression of a larger force, full auto has limited use in combat and I can see where a burst function could have benefits for those soldiers who don’t get a lot if trigger time. It’s always great to get feedback from someone who knows their stuff because they’ve been there and done it. Thanks for your feedback.

Are they still in regular use? I thought they were mostly replaced by M4s and M27s by now

They are still in use. It takes a while to phase out inventory and also find a new place for it to go. The Marines are still using them, some of the active Army still has them, and the guard and reserves are using them as well.

Classic! In a world of tacticool M4 style carbines and AR pistols, my Colt AR15 A4 is one of my forever guns. BTW, what ear pro are you using in your videos?

Ken, I am using the Walker Silencer 2.0s. I never thought much of in ear systems as they tend to hurt after a while. I bought these about a year ago and my world has been turned upside down by them. The are bluetooth enabled and I can use my phone to not only adjust the volume but also enhance certain frequencies. I have some hearing loss in my right ear thanks to my time in the Army and I can tweak each side so that they feel balanced to me. I have also fallen in love with NOT having large muffs that get in the way of the stock weld. I keep some electronic muffs as well as some custom made non-electric in ear systems in my range bag, but these have been my "go to" since I got them. Ended up buying two more sets in case they ever discontinue them! LOL

is the barrel as long as the regular civilian ar style rifles?
@LegacyArmsIntl

Yes, the M16a4 has a 20” barrel just like the AR platforms. The military version has a 1:7 twist rate whereas the civilian models have a few different twist rates to allow for different bullet weights.

When did the Army/Marine corp begin standardizing optics? Also didn't those show up just after Operation Iraqi Freedom?
@LegacyArmsIntl

The M16a4 was first released in the Army in July 1997. Prior t that, conversion kits of KAC rails and other modifoers were sent to arms room to convert the a2s, so in the late 90's you had both M16a2s and a4s in different unit inventories, but the a4 itself was widely released prior to 9/11 in the Army. As far as optics go, the Army (I don't know about the USMC but assume its the same) has been standardizing optics since the early 90s mostly due to contract opportunities. SOCCOM has always had a lot more latitude in what they bought and how they acquired it, but the conventional side has been standardized for a while. In the mid 90s every conventional Unit used an Aimpoint M68CCO which was an early variant of the CompM4. Later, the Army tested and issued out multiple optics to different units... the ACOG in various configurations, updated Aimpoints and EOTechs. Post 9/11, some units also chose to procure optics prior to deployment if they had not been integrated yet. So even though you may see a few different optics on rifles over the years, most were standardized and issued/ procured by the Army.
