Holy crap man, are you me? I left a job as an editor/sound designer in L.A. to become a machinist. I now make ultra high vacuum components and custom Vacuum chambers for scientific research and defense. This trade is so much more rewarding.

About to start my 123 Block project in machining class. I too am going thru a career change from almost 20 years as a farrier. Next semester I start learning to program CNC mills and lathes.

Congratulation, I m in machinist class in Quebec canada 🇨🇦 Never too late to learn!
I've heard of these before & really cool that you get to make your own & now can use it in future projects. So I've done measurements in thousandths before, was I seeing ten thousandths of an inch on one of those machines you were dialing in?

You didn't mention the most important steps...heat treat, surface grinding and lapping. Looks good though.

Learn in metric too. I know most of the tooling is standard but working for a German company it's really frustrating taking CAD to a fabricator who says they can do a job and find out 2 weeks before deadline that the work has been farmed out and is delayed. If you're think about starting a small shop there might be a niche for import design fabrication.

Are you finding real work in the physical sense more rewarding than working in the virtual world?

Great job, might have slowed down the spindle speed when chamfering so as not to get chatter.

Great question. I'm not quite sure. I'm thinking some kind of business. We'll see. :)
