"Stage Manager" is basically a modernized take on the "single window mode" from the earliest macOS 10 betas. It works almost the same way, with the same basic philosophy. Well, not really, or not exactly… With Stage Manager you can actually create window groups. I can see this being a useful alternative for people who only use laptops and can’t wrap their head around multiple desktops in Mission Control or external screens. Cutoffs from 2017, 2018, and 2019 Macs (ok the last one was because the last mac pro before it was so old). 5 years might be considered good for a phone, but Windows 10 will easily run on 10 year old laptops and will get support for years to come (yes 11 is different but 10 will be supported through 2025, an absurd life for some machines), I don't think I'd be happy with a 2017 Macbook Air losing support in just 5 years, or far more expensive machines in 6. Seems obvious it's to rush along the end of Intel macs, but it could well feel like shafting, in 2017 the switch was just early rumors and most people don't keep up with this stuff, or just weren't able to wait so long. Ironically the best way to stay supported on those systems might be switching to Windows full time on them, though I'm aware third party macOS patching tools exist to get some more years of support, but the very fact that some of those are very easy jobs (i.e patching one kext on one wifi driver) just says even more that the moving support lines are on flimsy technical barriers, and some of them seemed to have none, even if they didn't want to officially support an out of support wifi driver which is reasonable ish. We're past moving all drivers to 64 bit, Metal compatible GPUs, and it's not T2 because the 12" Macbook somehow sticks in there, it just seems to be ending models as they can get away with maybe based on a blend of popularity and other things, because there seems to be no hard technical line here.

@@techtipsuk it’s not about the features, it’s about raw support in the form of APIs and security updates. I personally recommended a 2016 MacBook Pro (before we knew how shitty those butterfly keyboards were, of course) to someone who is now my ex (we haven’t kept in touch, so at least I won’t have to deal with her complaints, but I feel for her because that thing was expensive) under the assumption that that machine would last around 8-10 years, as most Macs do. Sure, except for the fact that Apple managed to foist three extremely aggressive transitions on us (PowerPC to Intel, then x86 to x64, and now Intel to Apple Silicon) in just 15 years, it’s complete insanity. The least they could do would be to support older machines, even if they lacked support for certain app-agnostic features (i.e. most features they tout in WWDC Keynotes anyway), and keep them away from the recyclers for a few more years. They are being extremely hypocritical regarding environmental protection (as usual!) and breaking trust with their loyal customers. And, frankly, being lazy.

I find it a shame that an OS cannot be used on a system from 6 years back. Microsoft doesn’t do that, it installs and then it’s pot luck on whether component manufacturers support it with drivers etc. The main take away is that you can swap that Wi-Fi card out or add more ram to that windows system extending its usable life. Apple avoids that from day one rendering older product slowly less secure and useful which given how well they are built and how long they last only adds to the e-waste issue we are currently battling. For a company so keen to be green, they don’t half make it difficult for the rest of us to believe a word they say. Ordering an m2 air as and when I can though. I was already happy with the way MacOS window management / multi-tasking worked, so creating Stage Manager and this whole new way for working feels clunky. I would of much rather Apple spent this sort of development effort on really improving iPad OS for iPad Pros, and making it more MacOS like, so an iPad has fully fledged window management and second monitor support, can format external drives etc, run VMs and emulators, like lower spec Chrome OS tablets and Android devices can already do. Instead, Apple is fixated on developing pretty pieces of software that require you to own multiple Apple devices so you can properly function in their ecosystem. Continuity Camera is a case in point, why don't they just put a better camera in MacBook, or is the notch just more Apple marketing hype and functionally vacant (no Face ID etc)? Before that, we had the inept touch bar! I suppose it doesn't matter now if your special continuity camera iPhone holder obscures the notch, as it was functionally useless in the first instance!

I love stage manager, and the continuity camera, I’m often pulled into meetings whilst sat in my car, so to be able to do that then stop and jump into the office and continue with the meeting on my MacBook is awesome. @jonathancrowe9294

Continuity sounds useful. I do that sort of thing all the time with Teams. I am more of a Linux fan then a Windows or Mac fan but we have to use Teams for work and it actually works pretty well most of the time. One thing I do like about it is that I can send my video and audio over different channels. For instance if I am on my mobile hot spot I can do screen share or video over the hot spot and have it call my cell phone for the audio part thus avoiding audio lag when my hot spot is struggling with bandwidth. I also start calls on my office pc, move to my phone, go somewhere, move back to another pc or a laptop. This is great for those long conference calls that seem to always be poorly timed. Now if only Microsoft would let me change the colors in it to match the rest of my colors. Apple has a way of announcing things that others have had for a long time as something new invented by them. Multiple virtual desktops is another one. I had them why back when I ran Slackware on a 486 ThinkPad laptop. (Back when dinosaurs ruled the earth.) Stage manager doesn't sound like something I would like. I am a heavy (alt)tab user for single windows and if I want to group windows together I put them all on the same virtual desktop and use hot keys to move from one desktop to the other. I also usually turn off all of the animations I can because they slow everything down and I am used to moving around at speed with hot keys. The KDE group has some interesting idea's with their "KDE Activities" They are basically a super set of virtual desktops where you can open the "work" activity and it opens several virtual desktops with the work programs running where you left them. You can then close the "work" activity and open a different activity which opens different set of virtual desktops running a different set of programs. You can set up as many different activity's as you wish (work1, work2, home, media, game, browsing, etc. ) and switch back and forth when you switch between wearing different hats.

They should remake the dock instead of making stages. To open new app you can use: - the dock (dock or app folder in dock) - launchpad - spotlight To switch between windows you can use: - CMD + tab/~ - Dock - Stages - Mission Control Neither of those options works well. I can group windows by apps but I can't switch between groups and I can't create customs groups. There is no option to hide all windows. Heck, remember how last year live text originally was going to be an Apple Silicon-only feature?
