Great video John. I own several McMillan stocks ( gotta support my fellow Arizonans) and have used extensively over the years. The o-ring trick is good to start with until you know what height you like you cheek piece, but switching to two pieces of fuel hose cut to the length the o-rings sit is a much more repeatable (and trustable) solution. The other tidbit is about pillar bedding which does two things. The first is that they make nice solid pedestals for the action to sit on but they also maintain the correct distance and angle for the DBM in relation to the action and prevent the repeated torquing from causing misalignment and in turn feed failures. Keep up the great work.

I always thought that the difference was that the aluminum compresses and (to and extent) forms to the action under torque, making bedding less necessary. Regardless, interesting episode. McMillan is local here. They are a great company.

You can switch the cheekpiece wheel from right to left pretty easily. If you look into the cutout, you can notice a black and a red square block. Turn the stock upside down and out they come. One is threaded, the other one is more like a washer. Just swap those and you can push the Screw in from the left side and fasten it.Kind regards,Dennis

So for some reason a person who I won't label felt they could answer my question to John on whether or not the zero altered after the glass bedding. The reply was "It always alters when you restock a rifle" First I would like to point out I wasn't asking you. Two you either have very limited knowledge or are just a troll. My steyr SSG comes out of the stock every year for cleaning. Once I finish I put it back together and retorc to spec. I then fire a few fouling shots. It has consistently returned to zero each and every year for the last 17 years. As have my ruger 10/22's, my CZ's and my remingtons of which I have a few. They only exception to this is when I have removed the scopes. Now if the smart arse who thinks he knows the be all and end all of guns can shut up I would like to hear from John once he gets the chance

What about glass bedding degrading over long periods of time? Is there any evidence of glass bedding cracking or failing during extreme temperature changes? (I live in AZ, rifle will get well over 140 degrees just sitting in the elements.)

Please help me understand exactly how bedding increases the accuracy of a rifle. The action is bolted to the stock, the barrel is free floated and completely reliant on the action for support; how does the fitment of that action to the stock alter accuracy? I've read many articles and seen several videos where they state that bedding inarguably increases accuracy but never a specific cause and effect reason why it helps. Does it really make the gun more accurate or is it just making it easier for the shooter to perform better because there's no shifting of the two parts?

Short answer: a correctly done bedding job will reduce fliers due to the action, and recoil lug acting the same every shot. Less slop= less fliers= tighter groups
@peter9314

A bedding reduce also the recoil from the action screws. You have no moving from the action in the stock. Imo a chassis needs also a bedding.

Out of curiosity was there a shift in zero from bedded to unbedded?
@ch34pskate16
5 жыл бұрын
jjlb82 there always is a difference. If the bedding is done correctly you will see an improved grouping. If it’s done incorrectly you will see groupings worse than when you did the bedding. That’s why it best to shoot paper BEFORE bedding and keeping the paper for a reference AFTER bedding. If you don’t hand load your own ammo you will want to buy at least as many boxes of shells from the same “LOT NUMBER” as you will want to shoot before and after bedding to get a consistent results as possible. I would buy at least 4 boxes to start with. But you can never have enough ammo. I don’t shoot competition ,only for hunting. So I always take my first shot ,let the barrel cool down to ambient temperature and rain my bore snake through the barrel ,then shoot another round ,I continue this method until I’m comfortable that then gun is shooting the way I expect it to. My reasoning for this method ,whether it’s right or wrong,is that I don’t shoot 8 rounds at an animal, my barrels is always ambient on the initial shot. So that way I know what to expect. (In my mind it makes sense,lol).

Awesome stock! I would buy one tomorrow if McMillan offered a vertically adjustable butt plate like on my KRG XRay chassis. Do they happen to offer any solution for this? All the stock of theirs that I see don't have any adjustability other than length of pull.

I'm spending 450 dollars on a savage Savage 111 in .270 and it's a little of an older model without the accutrigger and a plastic stock. I have a budget of around 2000(with the gun) and what would you suggest to put the money towards if I'm using it for hunting deer, bear and coyote at about 750 yards? Like optics, stock, trigger, and little upgrades that you like and etc. But thanks for the videos love em!

My take on this Replacing that plastic factory stock will help as will selling it. Boyds, Houge, B&C, Choate or McMillan. You're a little more limited as it's the long action, much more limited if you have a gun that has the bottom bolt release. Weigh in the costs and weights(if it's an issue) to find the one you like the best. Chassis are expensive and would take up a lot of your budget. Get a PTG recoil lug, as the factory one isn't square. If the gun comes with a scope and rings, sell those off to get a good base and set of rings. Get a good optic. Get a new barrel and sell the old one off. There are tons of videos on how to do your own trigger job or if you have enough left, get one. A theoretical build goes something like this: Gun $450, factory stock sell for $30-40, if it has a scope and rings sell off for $150, factory barrel sell off for $40-120. Now the action costs you between $140-230. Weight isn't a huge issue the Choate Tactical stock is solid and only $200, weight being non-issue Choate Ultimate Sniper(it weighs like 6lbs) is $177, not having the more vertical grip not be an issue then Bodys is $170 prices from ebaco.com PTG recoil lug $26-35 PTG Bolt head $70 (optional) EGW 20 MOA base $40 TPS Products rings $95-120 Replacement Barrel $200-500 Scope $500-1000 Trigger $85-150 Total ~$1300-2500 Yes I know the highest is over your budget but that's getting all the highest prices, so it's a flexible system that can be under $2000 and really good. You will also have to factor in tools(if you don't have them, the barrel tool is like $40 and a go gauge is around $40 also(no go is optional) and shipping(if you also include that in the price). Hope it gives you some idea to the price you might spend.

This is probably a dumb couple of questions, but if the maximum distance you were going to shoot was 600 yards, you wanted to be able to confidently shoot a hostage-taker in the classic Hollywood type situation, and you had to use .308, would you go with a semi-auto or a bolt gun? Also, is it possible to get a bolt gun capable of that type of accuracy that weighs less than eight pounds?
@Howjadoo22

***** Rude much? The points in the question were stand-alone. It may have been implied, but I never implicitly stated that was the case. It probably would have been easier to understand that if I had made it a numbered list, but you still didn't need to be so rude about it.

For a law enforcement scenario, i dont think the longest shot was even past 200 yards. Military is obviously different (2700 yards). for 600 yard shooting, if the range your at even goes that far, any 30 cal is fine ,so are 260s, 338s, 50s, ect. but barrel life/cost wise... 308 is "best". as far as bolt accuracy, its possible but like everything else...how much money do you have to put into a quality rifle plus you need to practice yourself. you may have a rifle thats 1/4 moa accurate but you wont b able to just pick it up and start doing that.
@Howjadoo22

AZIROC Thank you for a reasonable and informative response. I'm not really looking to use such a rifle in any specific scenario, I'm just giving specifics for the capabilities I'm wondering about.
@AZIROC
8 жыл бұрын
anything that long (or anything really) it comes down to practice. my 308 ar is still way more capable than where i am at, and i consider myself decent. when i started i was getting moa - little over moa. not bad and for the most part respectable. but the quality of the parts i have, i knew it was me that was the "bad" in the equation. my shot book just went over 540 rounds and now im getting .3-.4 moa reliably...again, as long as i do my part. it just comes down to what do YOU want form YOUR rifle. do you want 1/2 dollar size groups, or dime size groups.

you can add shims if needed or just green loctite. would just have to get the measurement of the barrel extension (outside diameter) and the receiver (inside diameter) .
