We started our hike at 4:00am and caught the tail end of a beautiful sunrise up Mailbox Peak!
We summited via the Old Trail which is 5.4 to 7.2 miles round trip (depending on if you follow WTA or AllTrails - we clocked in 7.2 miles) compared to the gentler new trail which clocks in at 9.4 miles+ round trip. At 4,000 feet elevation gain, the old trail is short and steep. Going up it in ice and snow adds just a little bit more challenge to it.
Details:
- Discover Pass needed to park at the trailhead
- Definitely bring hiking poles. Microspikes are a must in the winter time.
- Ice axe is optional if you want to glissade down. I did not because it was a steep drop and icy on our way down as it was still early.
