I've made this recipe several times now and love it so much! Perfect every time! I love that there's no blending involved. In fact, every recipe of yours I've tried has worked out so well, that I now no longer want to make anyone else's recipes! So, my question: do you think I could follow this recipe, and substitute half of the distilled water for magnesium "oil"? Most of the magnesium lotion recipes I've come across use beeswax as the emulsifier. 🙄 Cheers! ~Audrey
@Lovelygreens
2 ай бұрын
Lovely feedback - thank you :) I've not worked with Magnesium oil before, but I think you can use it that way. Make a small batch and see? Also, beeswax is not a true emulsifier. I wouldn't recommend making any recipes that say it is. Beeswax is a thickener, and any lotion-like product made with it as an "emulsifier" can sweat or separate, especially with temperature fluctuation.
@a1hindes
2 ай бұрын
@@Lovelygreens I did give it a try and it didn't work quite as well. The only change I made was to sub half the water for the magnesium "oil." I ended up having to use my immersion blender for everything to emulsify, which made a very "whipped" consistency, but it's held now for several days without separation. I probably won't do it again. Yes, the use of beeswax as an emulsifier is usually my first clue that someone doesn't really know what they're doing with a recipe. 🙃

Beeswax is a high-quality, never completely understood by humans, resin. We just cannot fathom how it's REALLY created and what is its power. Being a resin, there's NO WAY mould can get there, let alone prosper. Blended with pure oils, with no water in them, still no way for mold to impact it.
@lmd2454

@@aaanita it definitely isn't an actual emulsifier, however, it can help the emulsification happen, it just doesn't make it stable. And although beeswax can't mold or go rancid itself, it doesn't protect the other oils from doing so either. Lip balm is a pretty stable formula because it is simple, there's no water, and it is pretty firm. All three things reduce the likelihood that it will go bad. So using it in lotions will not provide preservative action, or stabilize the emulsification.

Sun spots unfortunately come with a lifetime enjoying the sun. There are patches below each corner of the eye that many people get and other spots and marks. Sun damage is best treated by using a vitamin A derivative called retinol. It's not something that you can make at home, though. Staying out of the sun, using sunscreen, and nourishing your skin with chamomile and elderflower extracts can help, too.

Short answer, no. Beeswax is not a true or even a good emulsifier, despite the many recipes that say it is online. In the past, it was used in conjunction with borax, and in that case, they worked together to be a stable emulsifier. Borax has since been found to be a skin irritant for many people, so it's no longer used in that way.

Vitamin E does not work as a preservative. No vitamin can stop the growth of fungi, bacteria, and mold. At best, and only if it's strong enough (most Vitamin e products aren't) it can work as an antioxidant, meaning that it can help the oils in the recipe from going rancid. That's not going to save your cream from being a breeding ground for microbes, though.
