I paid for Brett's course. The majority of it is 5 minute audio recordings of him saying the same things he says in interview videos. There's 6 "video" lessons which are 5 minute Loom recordings. He doesn't show any actual numbers. He doesn't show any actual clients. He doesn't show actual proof that he's doing this with anyone. He also states blatant lies like he still uses the free version of Trello but that's impossible because it only allows 10 members/guests but he says he has 16 clients. So he's lying that he uses the free version or he uses the cheapest $5/month option and invites them as guests which you can have 1 guest per board, but I'm not sure why he doesn't just say that. I'm happy the course was only $100 but it was honestly a waste of money and while Brett is smart to share the idea of his system he falls flat in actually showing any proof that he's doing it. He also hasn't responded to anyone in the course community for over 7 months despite it saying he was active "1 hour ago." There's a number of people in the community who have said they've requested a refund but hasn't gotten a response from Brett about it.

I still dont get it. To make 120k with 5k per customer, you need 24 customers. To Guarantee 2 days for request you basically have 16 working hours for 24 customers to do 1 request for each. So it is only 40 minutes per request. How can you do something meaningful and valuable for 40 minutes of your work for the customer‘s request? What is it? I later heard in this video that he works with 20 x clients at a time. His website seems as if thousands of people are paying $5k a week, but only 20 at a time must do it. I don't think that's a scam. I've been thinking about how this could work in my head, so I'll put it on "paper." 20 clients per month x 5k = $100k, and he said he averages $120k a month, which is *24* clients a month. 24 clients, putting in one order at a time, that only takes him a few hours to do, but he hands it back done after 2 days ... 24 jobs, max x three hours each = 72 hours work needed to do, per 48 hours. What!!! *UMMMM YEAHHHH.* Okay, his site says sometimes it takes three days (my three key is broken), which is 72 hours needed for 24 jobs @ three hours each. And three x 24 hour days is 72! We cracked it!. So *IT IS POSSIBLE TO DO!* You can just never sleep, and you must work every second you live (no interviews). Dang. @@mattm7426

I'm sorry but am I the only one that thinks this doesn't make any sense? $5,000 a month for unlimited requests from one man who claims he doesn't even have to work that much. Let's say just two clients ask for a fully built out website at the same time. You expect me to believe this man can turn two high quality websites around in 48 hours, fully designed and built out in webflow? Even if they were back to back and he had 48 hours for each one that would be absurd. Anyone who actually works in design would see how unfathomable this would be and that's just with two clients. He supposedly has a lot more clients than that if he's claiming to be making as much as he says he is. Don't buy into this guys scam, he's selling an impossible dream through his courses and making his money off conning you.

There was a Twitter thread by a former client of yours calling your business model out for essentially showing its cracks in its unsustainability. Missing the 48 hour turnaround, having a lot of sick days (which makes this model unfair to clients if you're the only solo designer), as well as low quality output for the sake of fulfilling those turnarounds. Clearly you've bitten off way more than you can chew with this model. Why have you never outsourced the work?

Q1: How do you produce every single day 12 deliveries, all done by yourself? Q2: if you do all the work by yourself, how can you ever scale your business and go beyond? Q3: Even if you don’t want to scale, you feel comfortable working 16 hrs per day? Non-Stop, even weekends? Q4: There are no sub-contractors working with him?

He said that while he might have a lot of clients, only about half are making requests at any given time. So it could be 6 Project Deliveries per day not 12. Also, he said that he divides projects up into deliverables that take him approx 1 hour. For example, he might deliver 1 page of a 3-page project and then await feedback. I took his course so I can't remember if I got this info from the KZitem video or the course!

So basically according to this guy's portfolio, he is just modifying some templates he have in order to bring product to the client as soon as possible. There is no custom interesting solustions, it's just a normal design but nothing more. It's a good business model I guess, but only for small clients who don't need to to something custom or unique. It's just ignorance to compare this model with ability of having good internal designer or a design agency. You will never get the same design qualiry just because it's done without any research. And the last one. In order to get $120000 a month you need at least 24 clients a month. Every client will want at least (at very least) one design a week wich bring us more minimun 96 design a month total (24 clients * 4 tasks (one every week). So this guy generates a more than five design tasks every day. You can't generate that amount of design every day for different clients without sacrificing quality. If you want to get goot at design you can just try to be hired for google or any other big startup, get the same 120K but do some realy interesting design staff with normal deadlines and level of challenge. So in conclusion this business model is definetely not for everyone.

AWESOME - There's a LOT of really great info in this podcast. THANK YOU BRETT for clarifying his toolset. I think I learned so much about some new tools I didn't even know existed before. The using some that I already knew about in new and interesting ways. Those things are absolute GOLD. AND to hear his model of subscription based, pause/cancel anytime, no contracts is brilliant!! As a guy that came from the business side of things, this will definitely attract clients. BUT one VERY important point that I think newbies need to realize. He said that he had to work extremely hard for long periods of time in his life to acquire the necessary skills ALL BEFORE launching his business. YES he did clarify these points in the pod, which was good to hear and he even said "perhaps I should have made this clear earlier on" which is really good too. SO there was NO misleading info. It's just that newbies or people that are really frustrated in life may think "Oh cool.....I just do what he did and start cashing phat checks." But there was MUCH more time involved in this.

I am still confused as to how he keeps going about with this one man narrative.. he's mentioned in tweets he pays graphic artists... ?

I am very ignorant on this topic but I’d guess he means just one employee. Maybe he hired contractors here and there, but doesn’t pay them a salary. Every business has expenses.

Kanban is Japanese, so the host's first pronunciation is close to the original Japanese pronunciation. To be more precise, the "a" sounds like what he said, but normal length, not a long vowel. But that pronunciation doesn't exist in English, I think.

Amazing. I will think about how to apply this to real estate for owners who want to sell multiple properties!

I’m a 3D designer. I use Blender and 3D Studio Mac, but lean towards Blender mostly these days. Can I do this with 3D as well? If so, what’s the best practises with 3D would you say?

Hey Brett, Wondering if you can cover things about business structure like LLC, sole proprietor, freelance-model, accounting/finance, etc. Do these people hire accountants? Who does the taxes? Those sorts of things.

Super curious how this could translate into video production. Video is a beast in terms of workflow and time, but id love to hear about someone using this model as a video editor

Commendable success but Definitely not the first or even second to it. It is duplicatable but I would caution anyone who tries. There are a lot of factors involved including speed, commoditization of design, and wether you care about being a thought leader. He’s also noted in other videos that he works A LOT. So take this model into account but weigh all the pros and cons.

Doesn't talk much about the work/life balance involved with being a solopreneur. How do you take a single day off when there's 20 companies depending on your service? Super profitable, but it seems like a snowball rolling down a mountain, no way to stop it or slow it down once it starts going.

How does one man service 20+ clients? And turn over each request in 48 hours? His numbers don't match the story he's telling. He's outsourcing.

How do you deal with situations where you need to take some time off? Maybe you want to go on a 2 week vacation for example.
@MikeGowans
Жыл бұрын
Have a schedule gives you freedom. You schedule it in and adjust everything around that. Plus most of this type of business can always be done from anywhere. If you're doing what you love the vacation is everyday and the "vacation" is actually just changing the places you get to do what you love. A one-person business online is a lifestyle not a thing you do here and a life you do over here. Hope that helps.

Don't know if this is your intention or not but Brett you're got a good talent for podcasting (asking good questions, not interrupting guests, pushing guests to answer unclear / vague questions and replies) so you should definitely take in more guests and push this podcast, I feel like you could really be huge in this space, but you might also have tons of other stuff on your table. How about taking in Web3 founders / co-founders and hear their thoughts? Mainly NFT projects because I think most people follow you because of NFTs. Founder of RFTKT, BAYC, Moonbirds, 9Gag etc etc. Or talk to Web2 brands who has entered the space but failed e.g McClaren or interview Web2 companies who WANTS to enter the space but has no idea how.

I just want to know how he is managing designer work and devolopment for 5-20 companies a month by himself. Like is he building websites or is he just creating logos and UI? I don't understand how he can have 10+ clients and still be able to manage all of that for them. Like he said he builds websites. Does he just hand those websites off or continue to manage them?
