For over 10 years I have been strictly focused on railway photography. I photographed the railway that I love and work on, but at some point I noticed that I had stopped with my photography technique. For over a year now, thanks to your films, which I have been watching for a long time, I have started to take completely different photos. I have started to experience new possibilities, learn new photography techniques, and have noticed something completely different in the lens. Greetings from Poland. I am starting to write another, non-railway, online gallery... I just need to take some photos... so here I go... because there is no point in wasting time.

TLDW: 1. Program image review and magnification onto one button for easier focus checking. 2. Reduce battery drain by adjusting LCD/viewfinder timeout settings and turning on airplane mode. 3. Enable highlight alerts ("blinkies") to detect overexposure in the field. 4. For Auto ISO, half-press the shutter to see the ISO before taking the shot. 5. Monitor available shots and switch to compressed RAW if running low on memory. 6. Set the camera to prevent shooting without a memory card inserted. 7. Use custom file naming to easily identify your photos when sharing a camera or computer. 8. Turn off camera beeps and sounds for quieter operation. 9. Utilize custom settings (C1, C2, C3) for quick switching between different shooting scenarios. 10. Set a maximum ISO to limit noise in your images. 11. Check the diopter setting if images in the viewfinder appear blurry, as it may have been accidentally adjusted.

Deeply appreciate pros who are generous with their methods - they are almost invariably the best at their craft because they receive as much as they give. I think of Nancy Brown, a former NY fashion model who worked for Revlon and other top companies as a beauty photographer, and photographed lifestyle for stock. Her book Photographing People for Advertising was super useful to me several decades ago as a generalist people and utility photographer wanting to improve his craft. When I ordered a book directly from her, she signed it with a nice message. She was incredibly openhearted about sharing everything she knew. It was fun to learn how she would search the recycled shops for clothes and props for her cosmetic shoots, and how she would enlist her neighbors as subjects for her stock work.

I've watched a zillion videos on recommended camera settings and this is the first I can recall mentioning airplane mode. Thanks! I would think that airplane mode will not only slow down battery drain while shooting but might also reduce the chance that your mirrorless camera will overheat in hot weather by reducing the load on the battery and the amount of heat it generates. It could be negligible, but every little bit helps.

Tip no 5: Using compressed RAW means that your possibilties in post-processing is limited when using Canon DPP. Tip no 10: A word of warning regarding the use of ISO limiter settings: I've mostly been using manual mode with Auto ISO, and by doing that, I haven't really needed to pay much attention to the light meter. However, when I set an upper ISO limit I occasionally end up with a number of underexposed photos, as my camera doesn't alert me in any way when I exceed the upper ISO limit (other than through the light meter of course). I do understand that this may not be a problem for a professional photographer, but for me it resulted in photos where the exposure had to be increased in post-processing, leading to bigger problems with noise than the high ISO limiter was meant to solve...

Great tips! I do many of these myself. I'm no pro like you, but another tip is one I picked up from another photographer several years ago. It's to flip the AF ON (Canon) button to actually be AF OFF to stop the camera's AF from hunting for focus under certain situations. Now, I only use this when the subject is moving fast, easily goes out of frame and it's distance away isn't going to change (much). My specific scenario is shooting at airshows from the flightline. Generally the planes are moving left to right or vice-versa so distance to subject isn't changing that drastically, but if your AF loses the subject and starts hunting for it you can miss shots. I get focused on my target and hold the AF ON (now OFF) button until I need to refocus. That way if it leaves the frame there's no chance the camera starts hunting for it. When I want to refocus I simply let go of the button and maintain the shutter at 1/2 press. Also related to this is to use the AF range limit switch on lenses that have when it's appropriate. No need to wait for the lens to focus down to 1m and back out to infinity if the subject is aways much farther out.

Maybe a dumb question - is this not fixed by back button focus? Hold the button, once you have focus you want you release, and it locks that focus until you press the button again? If you have turned off the shutter button focusing, what is the difference between the two? Genuine question, I might be missing something
@NotIT
3 күн бұрын
@@tophmyster Yes, that can work too and it's essentially the same result. Its a matter preference and what you're used to I guess. For me, I like the shutter button to do AF/AE on 1/2 press since that what I'm accustomed to. It's pretty wild how many of the buttons can be remapped to do whatever you need on modern cameras. Good way to prank your photographer friends too (probably make them super angry).

Another very useful video. I shoot Sony. You can set initial magnification for previewing images, and set the location of zoom to the focus point. All my Sony cameras eat batteries when WiFi or Bluetooth are active. I turn “Airplane Mode” on most of the time, except when I am using a remote shutter. Canon “Blinkies” are the equivalent of Sony “Zebra” You can also set the image brightness level at which the zebras appear (I find 107% works well), and how bright the zebra pattern is on the display/EVF. Sony also has a setting that blocks picture taking when there is no card, “Release w/o Lens” in “File/Folder Settings” you can set a three letter prefix for the file name. You can also set the Photographers name under the “Copyright Info” menu that will be added to the file’s metadata and include the Camera Serial Number in the metadata using the “Write Serial Number” Menu option. You can turn sounds off with the “Audio Signals” option. You can save the current camera settings (still, fast action, tripod, landscape, or whatever settings you want) to 1, 2, or 3, on the mode dial by using the “Save Camera Setting” menu option. You can set Min and Max ISO by pressing on the right side of the wheel on the back of the camera, labeled “ISO” then press right again to set the Minimum and Maximum. The diopter setting is tiny and to the right of the EVF eyepiece on Sony cameras. It is tiny and a bit hard to find. You can get more detail by googling your camera model, followed by the keyword in quotes here. Make sure you use the Sony model name for your camera: ILCE-7RM5, ILCE-6500, ILCE-7M4, ILCE-7SM3, ILCE-ZV-E1, ILCE-1, etc.

One thing I wish the canon r5 would do is expose the auto iso in a similar way you would use back button focus. I know that could probably be changed in my metering modes, but I like how my metering is currently and would like to adjust the iso separately.
@Tumbleweed1961
Күн бұрын
I believe you can assign ISO to your top Mode dial. A quick look at the R5 page of Canon's website has an image where ISO is adjustable via the top Mode dial. Probably something you need to assign to the dial in the menu. Since I'm an R6 shooter the above is a WAG. I assume you press on the center button of the dial to set Mode on the top LCD but can also assign other functions in the menu that can be used without pressing the center button.

5:14 Hi Simon, great tips as always! 🍁👍🤓👍🍁 Indeed, it's useful to create custom file names but Canon does something with that name, that I find annoying : If I use Adobe RGB, the 1st caracter or that file name is replaced by an underscore to show the different color space setting. To me this is not helpful and only truncate the name I created... If I change that name so it fits, it will no longer be right if I switch the camera to another color space after that. Is there a fix or workaround for that?

There was a lot of emphasis on iso and noisy photos. It's worth mentioning that (in digital photography) noise is caused by too little light. Not a high iso. A high iso just makes the bad signal-to-noise ratio apparent. Underexposing by lowering the iso won't get rid of the noise. When you fix the exposure in post, the noise will return with a vengeance. The real solution is to open up the aperture and increase the shutter speed, if the motive allows it, or add an external light source. If you can't do neither any further, you're better off with actually shooting at the highest possible ISO. Setting a maximum iso for auto iso is only really helpful if you have a routine to watch the exposure meter, and switch to manual iso and manual mode when this happens. As a default setting, I discourage such a setting. For those quick blink-and-you-miss-em point-and-shoot moments, you don't have time to set aperture, shutter speed and iso manually. You're better off having auto iso, without any limit. Getting a noisy shot beats getting no shot.
@j_taylor

Good point. It took me a few reads through to grasp everything you said. 😀 I'll mention one edge case, for people like me who have older cameras and newer software, the software might adjust exposure better in post. As you say, do what's needed to get the photo. Some of my favorite shots are candids from an event in a bar. They have so much grain you could feed them to a horse, but...actually it gives them a gritty look that I think really works with the subject. At the time of course, I was just struggling to capture anything at all.

"Getting a noisy shot beats getting no shot." I used to feel that way too. Now, I don't see any point, as I'll never accept it as a keeper and delete it anyway. Now I only take clean shots, and don't even concern myself with missed shots. If they don't meet my standards, they would have been a waste of my time anyway.

"MY MENU" No need to scroll through the whole menu system just to format the card. On a related note; Somewhat disappointing when camera designs add a film simulation dial at the the expense of C1, C2, or other customizable buttons. Seems they are trying to attract more JPEG shooters ?? I recently (briefly) owned 2 mid-range cameras that had neither Custom Settings or My Menu options. Camera systems evidently designed by the marketing department?

Please stop throwing your hands around, especially pointing at the camera!!! It's really annoying.
