Spot on. I’ve been in Law Enforcement for 29 years and many of the people in the most trouble can’t get out of their own way.

QotV: Oh, now we have one that's not fun. I have learned in my travels that you must have rules for yourself, but you can never assume that other people are playing by your rules. No matter how hard you push yourself to behave honorably there is no reasonable expectation that someone else's definition of honorable behavior will match up with yours, or even that they value honorable behavior to the same degree that you do. The even harder-to-swallow pill here is realizing that your own behavior might well be dishonorable according to someone else's code. Now, whether or not a personal code of honor constitutes "homebrew" rules is left as an exercise for the student. :)

QotV: I don't know of any immutable rules I have pushed against, but I am working on homebrewing in to be less anxious about things outside of my control (he says during election year)

This one was deep, Servant. The more I think about it, the deeper the layers go. My homebrew is to operate in kindness as a default. It is not always present when people are only operating in the basic or starter set for the rules of life, but I think it is worth making sure that rule is pulled from the advanced rules and used whenever possible.

Solid advice, though I always advocate for the questioning and scientific approach to the absolutes. If you think you can fly and gravity doesn't apply, maybe try hopping off the porch before leaping from the eighth floor office window. QotV: I have, am, and will continue to buck the absolute that I am mortal. I shall continue to test the hypothesis that I am immortal by living the best I can for as long as I can. Given that I am approaching 40 and yet live, the theory seems to hold water!

I was raised believing in certain values so I thought I could be the stay at home raise the kids guy. Turns out that what a lot of women of a certain political ideology say they want vs what they actually want are two different things. Also believing that I could teach the virtue of loyalty to people with who don't comprehend it. Several thrown-under-busses later I find myself an honorary cat lady in my 40s now and trying to improve my employability choices after many bad choices, some of which seemed good at the time but I either failed to, or lacked the information to, see into the future correctly on how things would go in those professional paths locally. Also because I went more towards what my parents wanted me to be instead of properly thinking what I wanted to be. Made a lot of mistakes and I'll be honest, I'm not sure I know all the rules but I do know fantasy from reality cus reality has smacked me in the face a few too many times. I guess one rule I can share is: No matter how much your pet may emulate you, it is not a human and not genetically wired like a human. Dogs and cats learn differently from people and it pays to understand which methods work on each species and which don't. You'll live a more harmonious life with your pets if you understand that. And we are supposed to be good stewards of the other species.
